Cambelt Gremlin - Problem Solved

Post by panadero »

How a very simple issue can cause complete havoc.

I had a my cam belt replaced on my 04 HDI 110 by a Peugeot specialist some 20 miles away. A couple of weeks later I experienced some unusual minor engine rev changes. The problem got worse to the point where the car was virtually impossible to start and on the road threatened to break down at any moment. I was convinced that it was a fuel supply problem eg lift pump. I needed to get the car to a local diesel specialist but I had zero confidence that the car would make it there. Two separate AA patrolmen failed to correctly diagnose the problem. Being winter I decided to put the car off the road and even put it up for sale. Along came a prospective buyer who, guess what, was a Peugeot diagnostic expert. I explained to him that the car could not be test driven. Almost immediately he identified the problem – the nut securing the earth wiring to the bodywork was loose – almost certainly a legacy of the cam belt job. I tightened the nut and the car was back to normal and I have had no problems since!
