Slipping badly one day, fine the next.
What's going on?

If there is no sign of slip on the days it's OK it could be a fault with the master cylinder, does it engage right at the top of the pedal movement with no slack and then further down on the days its OK? I have only ever had this happen once on a Morris Oxford many years and it was because the fluid had become contaminated with oil and the rubbers had swollen obstructing the return port in the cylinder.

In the meantime the more it slips the quicker it will wear, if you can be patient enough to not let it slip it will last a great deal longer.

Thanks Peter, truth is it hasn't slipped with me driving so I can't comment, and I can't lay all the blame on the other driver because he can't make it slip now either.
It is right at the top but it always has been. A mechanic once told me I would definitely be needing a new clutch within the next 5000 miles, it's done over 50K since!
What about sporadic oil/DOT4 contamination? Can the slave leak onto the plate?
Please excuse my lack of product knowledge, I have only ever done 405 clutches, both were cable.

I have had three and they all near the top of the pedal travel, the first one I was warned about but we went on to do about 60k in it, it had done 245k when we scrapped it due to an immobiliser fault and I believe it still had the original clutch and DMF.

Oil contamination is a possibility but I would have thought there would have been evidence of leakage around the bottom of the bell housing and Hdi engines don't generally leak oil, I'm assuming it is an Hdi.

I used to run XMs for over 15 years and I had one start slipping, I drove it gently so it didn't slip and got another 30-40k from it and it was still driving OK when I sold it.

Worth a bleed? The take of (IIRC :( ) is near the top of the reservoir, so if it's got low at some point maybe it's gulped some air.

I'll check it and have a look for leaks.

Looking at Valeo kits there are umpteen PAS numbers (2052.T4/K2/J1/69 etc.etc.) which cross ref to several Valeo Nos. (826565/826345 etc.)
Are they all the same?
The Valeo online catalogue gives me 826033 for a DW10TD RHY

Reason for asking is there are a couple of 'BNIB' Valeo kits on Ebay but not for 826033

Piglet,
All 406 clutches bite close to the end of the pedal travel, when road testing various cars before buying mine I noted this in all of them
When I first purchased mine it had done 68k with full service history & one owner from new & the pedal was still close to the top.
Fast forward 3 years 150bhp mods later  & a fully laden caravan with 4 bikes on the roof rack one wife & two boys inside showing 105k
And going up a big hill in Wales :cheesy: it decided to slip (big time) but I backed off the throttle & nursed it home.
Now it was fine for the following 6 months with out being fully laden but as I tow up to three times a year FULLY LADEN
I decided to fit a new clutch kit the following spring (not the easiest of jobs but well worth it 8) ).
Now she can hold full boost in any gear fully laden BUT the bite point is still in exactly the same place NEARLY AT THE VERY TOP/END
Now to sum up I could have nursed my old clutch way past 150k BUT I like to use all the power I have got & I tow fully laden,
Oh & under hard acceleration the DMF had started to shudder/rattle

Some have said that you can (clean up a lightly slipping clutch) by giving it some harsh acceleration but I have not tried this
All the best DDD.

I drive for economy and smoothness which is why my clutches last forever.

My HDi 110 used to slip between 2000 - 3000 rpm, a momentary 'blip' in revs. It would only do this when the drive train was hot after about an hour of steady driving or motorway use, it would slip more readily with 4 people on board but would never stop normal progress so I did the best thing and added it to my 'ignore' list :D

Thanks all.
Had a look for leaks this morning, nothing visible (with under tray on) and it's fairly cleanish around there.
Went to check master cylinder reservoir and couldn't find it. Pipe disappears over the top of the gearbox somewhere. Is this a sealed system?

Would one of you kind gents be able to check on Peugeot Planet what my gearbox code is? I can't remember my login and I struggled with it anyway, shocking piece of software.

Would need your VIN code to have some chance of the right answer.

The clutch hydraulics share the brake m/cylinder reservoir, you should see a pipe poking into it from the side.

BE4-5L Thanks Doggy
What do they mean trim level Low-medium. Bloody cheek.

And thanks Steve re. shared master reservoir. Makes sense.

If I can pick up a Valeo or Gen. clutch set on the cheap I'll probably do it anyway.
