Dmf failing

Hi all
Well my old girl (2.0hdi estate 110 03 plate) 178,000 miles has just starting making weird and wonderful noises..
Sound changes with clutch pedal being depressed.. gotta be the dmf...maybe release bearing but whole lot will want changing...
Best price I've been quoted was £750 and worse £1200..
I'm going for the one in the middle £950 all In vat inc..
I would of gone cheapest but garage is miles away and can't do it for a week or so and I need car for work etc..
She's going in tomorrow, it's a Peugeot independent garage so all should be well..
Was a tough decision do I spend the money or just scrap her but just flew through an mot with no advisories , I just serviced
Her and recent new exhaust , tyres , cam belt etc etc and I believe better the devil you know..
I do 62 miles every day to work in her and get 48mpg so can't grumble, mostly motorway and A roads...
I service her every 6000 miles so let's hope I get a few more years ....

A failing DMF will normally make a squeaky/chirpy sound as you load up the clutch or as you start and shut down the engine.
Many HDi's soldier on with knackered DMF's without the owners knowledge. Clutch slippage is more of a concern. I've only heard of one DMF 'failure' on this forum (unless someone can correct me) where the DMF broke up and started catching the inside of the Bell Housing and making a massive noise.
A solid flywheel conversion seems a popular choice (coupled with new engine mounts).
It is a big job to be fair, at least a full day I believe.
If you've never replace the lower rear engine mount I'd recommend you get it checked out as this would make a huge difference to the way the car drives (especially with a new clutch in place).

Hi welly
It's been making the chirpy noise since I got her at 90k and as wasn't too bad I just left it.
The noise now is very loud, and u can change the noise with pressing the pedal..
The clutch is not slipping though but at 178000 miles prob soon will be ...
I will mention to the garage about the mount..

My DMF was failing at 105k made a horrible shuddering under heavy load.
But mine is remapped & I tow a fully laden caravan
But before it was changed I could make it shudder under heavy acceleration
It's took me a full day & half doing it at home, it's quite labour intensive.
£50.00 per hour x eight hours + parts £400.00 + vat & bingo £960.00
Hence why I did it myself

, but it's not a job to do at the side of the road

Yeah I know it's a big job, not grumbling about the price, was a tough decision whether to call it a day and weigh her in but
Where else can I get such a reliable and economical car for the money??
Everything else has been done so hopefully get a few more years....

I think you've done the right thing as the 406 is well proven otherwise and quite easy to live with (unlike most moderns).

All the basic stuff I do my self, service , brakes etc, changed fanbelt and tensioner last year myself, had someone do the cambelt and waterpump though..
Let's hope for many more years... hope the turbo holds out as that's the only thing now that ain't been done

The turbo's on these never fail, they leak oil from the air hoses but that's about it (unlike modern etc.....

)

I annually clean out the air doser, always seems to be a bit of oil around that area....

You should look inside a diesel intercooler if you wanna see oil

always amazed me how that oil doesn't end up in a 'pool' and get ingested by the engine in one free power boost but it never seems to leave the I/C.

Oil vapour condenses back into the familiar gunge as the charge is cooled, so it's going to settle at the lowest point i.e. bottom of said intercooler.
Most of mine seems to find it's way out between the inlet boost pipe and the bottom connection spigot without too much difficulty.

Just got her back , what a difference...
Clutch biting point much nearer the bottom now not right at the top and pedal is much smoother..
So far so good

))

Let's hope so, I did notice steering a bit heavy and not self centering as much as before.
I see u have done a post on this, what was it, did it go away??
It's not too bad but def different to how it was ..
Apart from that it's like a new car

Yes mate,
You have to drop the subframe down slightly to get the gearbox out, when doing this it's best to loosen the
steering rack before hand to avoid any damage to the bottom joint, many garages & mechanics say you don't need to.
But I think it's best practice, because as you say mine was stiff after doing the clutch & wouldn't self centre

I improved this to a point where I'm happy with it, I got a can of spray white lithium grease and thoroughly soaked
that bottom joint whilst it was up on axle stands with my son taking it from lock to lock. ( with the engine off !!!)
But the keys in the ignition of course

.
