Clutch and DMF (preparing to say bye bye...)

Hi everyone,

I placed this question on my "Welcome" post, but given it was in the wrong topic, most likely you missed it (this is me being optimistic :lol: )

So, my clutch started to slip about a month ago on 4th & 5th gears at around 2,000RPM (when fully accelerating), my dear friend (who happens to be my mechanic) told me that if I could live with it, I could still take a few thousand miles off it if I was carefull enough to avoid forcing the clutch too much.

Also, a month ago was when my pug made the yearly maintenance (changing oil, filters, etc) and it's in pretty good shape, BUT (there's always a damn but...), a few days ago, I started to notice that the car was making more noise when running. The noise seems to come from the engine but I can't specify from where because I only ear it when the car is on the move and with a gear engaged (meaning that with the car stopped or when with the clutch disengaged, it's quiet as always).

To narrow things down, I made a list:

-Noise: Kind of like the normal engine noise but a bit louder, no funny noises whatsoever, really seems like I have a more "powerfull" engine in terms of sound (Ford Mondeo 1.9 TDI sounds simillar).
-Acceleration: Seems to make a bit more noise when accelerating but I can't be 100% sure since the engine itself makes more noise as the Revs go up. :roll:
-Speed: This is the King of the "noise", the faster I go, the Louder the noise - IMPORTANT: If a gear is not engaged, NO NOISE, 10mph or 120mph, no noise.
-Gears: As I said, not sure if the noise gets louder with increasing revs, but I notice it mostly on 4th & 5th gear.
Iddle: Fully iddle is quiet as it has always been :cheesy: Seems normal when increasing revs when iddle, but I don't remember how it sounded before so I have no terms of comparison...sorry :shock:

So, pretty much, engine gets louder when a gear is engaged and with increasing speed, but it's not speed related...Am I right to think that my DMF is on it's last miles? Maybe she doesn't want to let the clutch die alone :mrgreen:
Any experts around here that can give me their opinion?

By the way, I've fund a LuK Kit (DMF + Clutch) and I already have confirmation from a couple of different stores that it fits my model, BUT (again, the frikin but...) other stores said that they couldn't confirm because they don't have the OEM reference for this combination (Clutch + DMF) for my model :?:
Any kind soul can confim this for me? It's the best deal ever (360€ - Shippings and VAT included), so I really really want it to fit :roll:

Just from scratching around the web for common problems on these 406 hdis, my first thought was crank pulley?
DMF probs I'd expect to be accompanied by juddering etc.
Regardless I'd be looking to change the DMF if I was replacing a clutch - too much of a ballache to pull the gearbox out twice imo.

Thanks for the feedback Captain,

I also read a lot about the crank pulley when searching for "engine noise" etc and it did seem like the most common issue, and I was already sweating because 2 years ago the crank pulley blew up on me right when I was parking the car at home after a 400mi trip and it wasn't pretty (nor cheap...) and I was really really lucky that it didn't totalled my engine (3 mechanics that were looking into the engine when they went to pick my car were amazed, something about a cylinder or piston having made 1/2 a turn along the trip, getting out of synch without stalling the engine but avoiding damage to the engine when the crank "blasted") :roll: Not sure if it's the correct description but I'm no mechanic and my technical English for mechanics is very very poor.

But one thing I read in most of the threads was that the noise was independent of the gear engagement, meaning that the noise is there wether a gear is engaged or not and it would get louder at high speeds. "My" noise is only there when a gear is engaged, at high or low speeds, as soon as I press the clutch (or if the car is iddle) the noise isn't there, so I trully hope that the crank pulley has nothing to do with it :cheesy:

I've done some further trials and the noise seems to be related to RPM, at least when under load. It is most noticeable in 4th and 5th gear going uphill but I managed to also hear it when in 3rd (uphill).

Let's see, I'm changing the Clutch + DMF in about 1 month (I need to change them both, at least here in Portugal if you change only one, the warranty expires...), just waiting for some kind sould to give me their feedback regarding the LuK Kit I indicated, I trust more in you guys than in the store clerks :lol:

I can't comment on the LUK clutch for your car, but I believe it is the only OE option for the 2.2 HDi.
I've had two of them fitted to my cars, both are still running fine after 70 and 50k miles respectively.

Thanks Doggy, your comment made me go that extra-mile to try and figure things out by myself 8)

I managed to take the reference number of the Flywheel that's in the KIT I mentioned, it's 415013810, which is a replaceable part for my Flywheel (0532.L0) :cheesy: and also for the Clutch that's in the KIT, it's 623304100, which is a replaceable part for my Clutch (2052.F0 or 2051.L8) :cheesy:

That sorts things out "Kit"-wise :!:

What about the engine noise, any opinions about it?

Crankshaft pulley is on the table but with some question marks (explained above), DMF is on the table but I have nothing to back it up...
