I have the car due in for MOT next saturday, last week i noticed the hole in the back box, and bought a replacement on saturday, the man said its actually for the 1.9td but it would fit fine, i sensibly brought the exhaust home, cleaned it down, and proceeded to paint it with high temperature paint, the sensible part being that this was done before setting the old backbox beside it to compare the two.
When fitting up the new backbox, the hangers went on but it was too far from the main exhaust pipe, so i took it off, and as it was saturday evening and there was no chance of getting another backbox, i cut the hangers off and welded them back on in the right place, using my cousins MIG welder, which had no gas, but the weld seems to hold, the area cleaned up ok and was painted again.

But when i fitted the backbox tonight, the bit of the main exhaust pipe where it meets with the backbox is a bit crumbly, the clamp doesn't seem right, and as a result it blows out here.

The middle section of exhaust is fine apart from at the end where the flange is, should i take it to get repaired, would a different clamp help, or what would be the price of a decent stainless steel exhaust be, this one was changed about 4 years ago.

If the join is on a straight section you could cut it back to where some decent metal is and put a sleeve over it and clamp it on. Unfortunately you generally find that if part of its is going rotten the rest won't be far behind.

The eggsauce systems don't seem to last well on the 406's in the 3 years I had mine I replaced every single part in stages.

Bodging the tubes and fittings only ever seems to be temporary so you might be best to bite the bullet and replace the middle section now. You might even have to get yet another back box to match properly, maybe saving that 1.9 box for one of your other projects?

I bought a tube of exhaust paste, took the clamp back off and applied lashings of the stuff around the area, its a bit of an aurthur daley repair but it should last through the MOT.

ive just got a back box off them for the 207.. 21 quid incl free post, they sound abit tinny but for the money theyre good,

The car went in for its MOT yesterday, the MOT man looked over everything underneath and did notice the backbox had been worked on but the car still passed thankfully. That gives me a year to look out for a decent stainless steel system.
