2.2 fuel economy!!!

As there have been a few 2.2 owners fettling with their engines lately I thought I'd post the fruits of my labours following a recent trip to the Welsh coast. The trip consisted of a hefty mountain, lots of steep hills at as much throttle as I could use without the other half shouting at me and lots of the twisty stuff.

Anyone familiar with Dinas Mawddwy might be interested to know fully loaded with family and luggage she went up in fifth gear and I only dropped the gears for the tight 3rd gear corner then back up to fifth again!

Just goes to show what you can do with a cheap laptop and removing some non-essential bits.

I can't quite match that, but on the current tankful, I commuted to work last week + plus the w/end of short runs. Today, I went to work, then Huntingdon - Hemel to pick up Mrs Doggy from our daughter's place, a-l-m-o-s-t home, only to discover she'd forgotted some essentials.
....So back to Hemel, then back home. The result:

50.5 mpg
673 miles
41 mph average

range showing as 155 miles.

Yes Jon, the generic map it is, I did try the '200' map but found it way too 'jerky' on acceleration to be user friendly day to day and a bit dangerous on wet roads. Trying to nip out of a junction when the wheels turn but you don't go any where can turn your undies a slightly darker colour in rush hour traffic.
Other than a noisy top link that I still haven't sorted and an airbag light that stayed off just long enough to pass its MoT retest I'm quite pleased with her at the minute.

Unfortunately Doggy my long run is a seldom occurrence and I'll be back in the high 30's average when I'm back at work and nipping to Tesco, not complaining tho as I still get the same or better than my old 1.9 on fuel and have the knowledge I can safely overtake when I need/want to!

Maybe after 50k miles with the '180' map, you develop a 'feel' for it.

When I ran the 200 map it was prior to my vac system repair/stroke modifications which may explain the all or nothing boost I was getting. When I (eventually) get round to swapping the pipe from the turbo EV to the actuator to complete the modifications I might give it another go.

Is my failing memory correct in thinking Gingermagic was also having vac system issues recently? it may be the key to making that map driveable.

Feel free to go into great detail and prolong the thread just for Welly

Probably the best figures I have seen for a 2.2, certainly better than mine but the 2.0. will do 60mpg at 60 mph all day so it still leaves something to be desired.

I must agree the 2 litre is the way to go for good fuel economy and if I were a sensible man I should have bought a 110.
I'm fairly positive I could add another 5MPG to those figures if someone flattened the welsh mountains and another 5 if they banned tractors and Sunday drivers. On the occasional 'take the Mrs shopping' M54 run from Telford to Shrewsbury with the cruise set to 70 (ish) I can push for 70 MPG, its only about 14 miles each way and sh*t me it's boring!!!! I usually entertain myself by trying to do the journey just using the cruise buttons to accelerate and decelerate but you have to think ahead to avoid using the middle pedal. Holding the + button reminds you why you bought the thing in the first place

If he asks you to be a 'ring bearer' be careful, you already get bent over and shafted by him at the pump several times a month and he may be after a last go before he ties the knot

I don't have that problem, I'm an old man and drive like one, rarely exceed 60 mph and 2000 rpm. I had my moments when younger, in the days of Vauxhall Cresta's and other 6 cylinder delights but comfort and economy are my priorities now, 67.8 mpg over 650 miles coming home from Scotland a couple of years ago, it was a hot day mind.

I found that my fuel economy improved during the short time when I was driving over the Brecon Beacons every day, sure it was 7 miles uphill at 15mpg, but then it was 7 miles down the other other side at ---- mpg, so overall my economy went up by a few mpgs.

Yes, you're right there, ginger eventually found his air dosers had a significant vacuum leak, IIRC.

Since the vacuum is used to reduce the boost and the '200' map operates at 200 mbar more boost pressure than the '180', it stands to reason it's going to let the boost build further before trying to regulate the pressure, so just when you're easing off due to wheelspin, it cuts the boost back so you're floundering off boost in the next cog. Not a recipe for smooth progress.

(Come to think about it, the capsule for my bypass heat exchanger throttle butterfly looked none too healthy either - the vacuum pipe was very loose and there was definitely some oil staining, leading you to think the oil from the breather was getting into the vacuum system by that route).
