As i dont know much about mechanical stuff i can only Welcome you to the forum.
Frend of mine had similar problem with suzuki, they stopped to pay something and shifter just didnt want to go out of gear.
Car blocked.
After some juggling around, turn of turn on it simply jump out in neutral, now again its running ok,but dont know for how long.
Is your car completely blocked?

it could be the box has a fault with the gate on 3rd but it could be that it is seized in 3rd. if its a fault with the gate then it mite just need shocking to jiggle it so with a block of wood and a big hammer move round the box hitting it or you could get a new box. i would also pop the linked off the back of the box and see if the mechanism on the box can be moved by hand or not.

also if you have the space for it try starting it in gear as it may have some effect on the situation. this could also be a clutch fault.

3rd gear seams to get hammered in pug boxes so it could be that you swap a bad one for another

cost all depend on how you get it fixed you could go to a back street mechanic like me or you could go to a dealer and so for the price of the box a refurbished box or second hand the price will go from one extreme to the other depending on country and area

i would do this for £550 depending on diagnosis and if any other parts needed and recovery to my yard.
this would be a second hand box

i hope that i am not braking forum rules by quoting the cost of the job but he did ask for an idea on the cost so i have told him what i would do it for.

Hi Guys,
thanks for the quick responses!
ares...thanks for the welcome and there is little movement.
Madmadmax.....popped the link off as your suggestion and i have very slight movement which was not improved by block and hammer(admittedly not a lot of room to swing the hammer !!!). Exchange recon box £895m plus fitting here in essex,i think you are right second hand box the way to go, thanks for the idea of cost. Most places around here wont comment until they have "seen the car"( bit difficult when it stuck in Third!).

Again thanks for the advice, most appreciated,

i wold also think about putting a new clutch on at the same time as the box is off it will save on cost in the future
