2.1 TD - Bosch electronic pump swap: opinions / info please

Anybody know how practical it might be to fit the electronically controlled pump / ecu from a late 1.9TD to a car with a 2.1 engine, if you have both cars to play with and don't mind canabalising the 1.9? (Working on the assumption you have both vehicles up & running to start with).
I'm not put off by the electrical complexity, if sufficient information is 'gettable'.
The object is to build a veg-powered 2.1 exec estate using my bro's 1.9 to donate the necessary stuff. Probably doesn't add up in economic terms, but could be an interesting project.

KrisB knows everything possible about this and has done these swaps - I'm sure he'll be along soon, or send him a PM/email (or

I remember a thread here from a few years ago of a guy doing just this swap.

Just use the fully mechanical pump from the 306, not the semi ecu unit from the 406.
Yours is the only other 2.1 exec estate I've heard of, they're rare as hell.

Wanted to avoid that because the 'semi ecu' one works so much better and we've already got it all

Even rarer than that, as we haven't tracked one down yet, but I have seen a few for sale in the last couple of years................

Ah, so you're putting a 2.1 into a 1.9 based car?
If not you need to swap all the engine loom and ecu stuff as the 2.1 ecu is intended for the lucas-epic pump, totally different workings to the semi ecu bosch.

No, just thinking of converting a 2.1 to use the 1.9's pump and anything else necessary as we have the whole car....

Yes. I'm more or less expecting to, just wondering if it's possibe to find all the diagrams etc?

Complete engine wiring swap should do it, including the ecu. Need to swap in the bosch injectors with lift sensor too.

Like Steve says.
Just remove the engine loom from the 1.9TD and directly fit it into the 2.1TD.
Then remove the pump/injectors from the 1.9TD and fit them to the 2.1.
Might be worth having a look for the fuel pulse while your at it for the trip computer?
Also while the pump is off you're going to have to remove the protective plate over the imoboliser cover in order to up the fueling.

Couple of good points there, Sam, thank you.
I'm thinking I might have to swap the clocks to get a working tacho - does thay have implications for speedo accuracy?
Do you reckon this is the real deal, or an LX with a D9 exec interior?

There is no reason to have to do anything interior wise.
Everything should work like for like!
You just unplug the engine loom fromn the 1.9 and fit it straight to the 2.1.
I looked into doing this myself a few times when I had my TD.
Might be worth getting both engines out to do the pump and injector swap. Will give you pleanty of room for to swap the looms over.
Don't forget to label everything up as your unplugging it!
If you have the engine and gearbox out you might aswell do the clutch and engine mounts too. Shouldn't cost more than £200 and will make a massive difference!
And if you don't mind, if you do plan to do this conversion I could pop up for a day? Mainly to be nosey but I could lend a hand also

Also worth mentioning is get another max fuel screw. I managed to snap mine removing the imoboliser shield and it's highly likely you will too!

Good of you to offer, but don't hold your breath. I've got to talk my bro into it first and he's not known for his impulsiveness.

Run a grinder throug the small lump towards the back of the pump and push out the roll pin.

And you could always pop the 2.1TD engine bay loom and pump back on his old 406 and sell it on for a few hundred squids!
