Sloppy gear linkage

Hi,

Just been working on a friends 1998 2.0 16v and the gear lever is very sloppy. Its very difficult to select the right gear and needs a push to engage a gear after which the lever springs back.

I was wondering if these linkages are prone to wear and how difficult it is to repair?

Steve.

Clearly not a common problem then!

I'll get underneath and check the linkages and report back.

Unfortunately this involves removing the exhaust according to Haynes manual.

usually on the 2.0 16v its the clutch, mines got to the stage where its almost un-driveable, but i just force it into gear

My 406 (2.0 D8) was pretty hard to get into gear - eventually the linkage sheered off going home one night and the car had to be towed!

Not impressed one bit!
