I have a 406 SRi from 1999, that won't start. The starter cranks, but the engine does not start. There seems to be no power to the fuel pump, and I can't hear it when turning the key. Furthermore, there seems to be no spark from the coil.

I have connected a diagnostics tool, which I know works perfectly (working on other cars), but it cannot connect to the ECU. The only information I get is that there is 12.6v on the diagnostics connector.

Fans, lightening, doors and so on, is working perfectly.

The problem started slowly, first it just took some time to get started, but now it won't start at all.

I suspect the ECU to be defective. Any other suggestions?

Hello. I'm pretty sure that I've read on there that up until 2002 no-one was being forced to use standard code reader protocols, so a generic code reader probably won't be able to "talk to" your ecu.

If I were you I'd head straight for the double relay (it's in the box with the engine ecu).

Thanks for your reply. I've had the double relay out and took it apart. It looks fine, no sign of damage. Connectors seems fine too.

I wonder if I should be able to see/hear the relay engage no matter what, when I switch on the ignition? Even if there is other problems with ECU or elsewhere?

I know that the diagnostics protocol could be the problem, but as the tester is a PP2000 and "should" be working on a car like this, I doubt it.
