Hi Lads
A couple of days ago the alternator belt snapped and i drove about six miles before i found a lay-by to pull into then got recovery home .Having replaced the alternator belt the problem i now have is that the engine is turning sluggishly and won't start .I've tried using a booster pack and a mate has tried slave starting it all to no avail. Ive had the battery on charge all night and it's still the same. The car is a Yreg 406 estate2ltr hdi

Did the car drive OK between the belt snapping and you stopping, (apart from not charging and heavy steering).
Was the old belt tangled up around the crank pulley at all?

It's possible for a damaged aux drive belt to get caught in the timing belt and cause all sorts of mayhem. Yours is probably OK, just odd that it doesn't want to start / turn over quickly. Maybe coincidence, but I'd be tempted to inspect the cambelt and check the timing, just to be sure.

Take aux belt off,
turn crankshaft pulley see if alls free,
start engine if it fires up,
it couid be :
belt was fitted incorrectly:
Wrong belt:
Somethings seized / pulley, air compressor etc, check each one,

Lozz would be correct. This once happened to my old D8 due to a siezed alternator.
Probably the belt had snapped also due to the same awkwardness of one of pulleys

Hi Lads
Up till now I've took aux belt off and checked all the pulleys and they're all spinning freely . Ive also taken the timing belt covers off and everything seems OK.My mate is coming tomorrow to check timing .I did find some strips ofbelt at the rear of the enginebut nothing in the timing belt even with everything off it still sluggish turning

The snapped belt could have hit and damaged some wiring preventing the car from starting.

I would be checking the starter motor.
