Hi there
I have a 1997 2.1 diesel engined Peugeot 406. Driving along at about 60mph, engine dies no bangs no white smoke, AA out cambelt broke, recovered. Have since done a quick check Cam belt still there but not turning. Have checked the workshop manual and have noticed that the pistons have recesses. Was wondering if anyone knows if this is one of the types of engine that when the camshaft belt breaks that the pistons do not hit and bend the valves.

Hi,
No sorry, theyre not a Safe /none interference engine, theres not many that are,
from what ive Read: its the cam followers, fingers that break, on the 406 inthe event of cambelt failiure,
What do you mean the cambelt not turning - are all the pulleys locked, or is the belt just not going round, Most probs the break on the belt is at bottom if it is,

Hi
Thank for that infomation. Have only had a chance to have a quick check. Pulled the cover back a bit and the belt feels tensioned though it is not going round when the engine is turned over. Hope to be able to have a proper look at it this week.

Peugeot diesels are designedto break the rockers in the event the piston hits the valves. Of course this isn't always the case. Remove the rocker cover and see what the rockers are like ?

Hi
Thanks for that Bailes. Reading what lozz had said about the rockers I was hoping that I would be able to just have to replace the rockers, fingers crossed.

Dont turn the engine over any more mate,
the more its turned the More damage it will do,
best to get the covers off and check the Belt, if the belts not going round and the Cranks turning the Belts gone imho,
