406 HDI 2.2 Coupe - Desperate for Help! ECU related

Ive just brought a 2.2 hdi coupe and half way home hellooooo mr engine light!
I tried contacting the seller just to find out what exactly is wrong with it, but doesnt want to know.
Anyway I got an ELM327 code reader, doesnt work at all on this car (so firstly I need advice on what readers do work). I also read loads of articles about a 'defapped' file. I am very familiar with flashing files with KWP2000+ so would very much like to try the 'defap' to see if this cures my problem.
Before deleting my post please read this: I do not want a 180BHP map file! I do not want to break any forum rules/etc. ALL i want is assistance on having my ECU running de-fapped software so I can cure my engine light / limp home problem. I really do not want the 180BHP variant.
Obviously failing this I need to visit the main stealers.
Thanks very much

First of all:

I'm guessing from that outburst that you tried the coupé club before coming here

Calm down, we're not as anal here
Readers. If you want a reader, you'll need the Lexia interface and Peugeot Planet 2000 software. The interface is about £300 from dealers and the software is not legally available outside the dealer network besides the occasional £500-£1000 one-off on ebay, usually sold complete with interface and 15 year old laptop to run it on. Haha. Alternatively if you drop a few quid (I think the going rate's about £100-£150) on an interface from a chinese ebay seller, we won't judge
I would definitely not recommend re-flashing your ecu while you've got an unknown fault though. At least find out what the fault is first - if you can't wait, I suggest either pay the dealers for a diag while you wait for a chinese parcel, or post your location and one of us pp2000 owners might be able to help you out.

Hi,
Thanks for your response, much appreciated!
I tried the coupe club but their sign up page appears to be broken and keeps telling me I haven't filled in the form when I have. Anyway about the interface, do these chinese replicas come with software capable of reading codes or would I still need to obtain peugeot planet?
Im based in Macclesfield but will be in Hinckley over the weekend so if anyone has the kit it would be great if you could read off the codes! If not I'll visit the stealers.
Id still be up for help with a defap of my own ECU ROM. (ie, I download it from my car, someone helps me defap, I upload). I might be missing something but I can't see how this would be too risky even with a fault code? Also why I really do NOT want to try that generic 180 at this point!
Thanks for your help. Hope I can get this car sorted as its a really great motor except this one annoying thing!

As mjb says, you're probably going to need it diagnosed at some point, but if you know how to do it, e-mail me your current ecu file & I will delete the FAP code, you can put it back in & try it.
(You will need to remove the FAP element too within a few days, or revert to the orignal if you do).
That would get you 136 FAP-free horses*, drop me a PM if interested.
* no purchase necessary, offer limited to one per vehicle, other outputs are available

What are you guys talking about with fap codes and ecu's? you're losing me... I do like free horses though they sound fun.

Get yourself beamed up to a 2.2 HDi, then it will all make sense.

Doggy - cant seem to PM you at the moment... Could you maybe PM me your email address? I'll get my map downloaded tomorrow. Really appreciate the help

i wont run it longer than one journey on the "defap" map (unless it works of course then i'll whack the fap/cat out!)

Just noticed this morning the car drove spot on going into work.... Seems to only kick in to limp mode when up to temp and been doing 50+mph for a good few mins.... Sound FAP related?
Happened again: I was overtaking someone going 40 in a 60 zone, revved to about 4k and the engine light appeared... car was upto temp.
Think im going to hammer out the DPF/CAT because even if this doesnt cure it its on my to-do list anyway.

What message came up on the display when it went into limp mode?
Was it the usual 'Anti Pollution Fault' and do you have the FAP canister light come on at the top right of the instrument cluster?
MJB and Doggy are right that you could do with a code reading session as it could point you in the right direction, one quick thing to check is on the right hand side of the engine next to and just below the engine cover is a rod for the swirl diaphragm,
1Z8hqj9FjBo
this video was made by a member on the Coupe forums, it shows how it operates, when you start the engine it should immediately jump backwards and then when the revs pick up over 2100 it activates and moves forward, if it doesn't operate link in the video it can point to a vacuum issue.

Why'd you not just pay some1 the £40 to diagnose it instead of defapping etc 1st? Or am i looking at this from the wrong angle. Personally i wouldnt touch anything til i had the diag done .But hey....

Thanks for the vid, I'll check that soon as I done the cam belt as the vacuum things sound like it could be whats causing the problem.
About the de-fap: Even if I dont defap now, and the fault is something else, its getting defapped sooner or later anyway. So if I whack it out now and it doesnt solve my problem, it is not a waste of time.
Thanks for all the replies! As soon as I get on the coupe club I'll look at that dianostics guide too!

First things first: get your fault code read. You don't necessarily need a dealer or PP2000: my local mechanic has a reader that works on my car, and he doesn't charge for reading the odd code now and then. Until you know what the code actually is, we're all just guessing.

I'd normally do a defap regardless of what else there is with the car, even replacing it with a standard power map with FAP disabled you are knocking out one of the the most failure prone systems in the car and lowering the amount of things to check out, you should be ok to load the map to test it then drive about for a few days before removing the FAP, i put the map on my estate Thursday night and only did the removal today, on my coupe i did 7 days and 300 miles between it.
There will be someone in you area with a PP2000 im sure who could read the codes for you my my guess is you will find a P0245 error due to vacuum problems.

Lexia is on the way. Going to try loading the de-fap map to see if that helps too but to be honest over the past couple of days its becomming harder to get the engine light on! Engine has to be up to temp and I have to boot it for a few seconds.
Once the PP2000/Lexia thing turns up I'll know more. Still whacking the FAP out when I feel up to it! Anyone got a link to a guide or something for doing the exhaust side of this?
