406 110 HDI gear ratios

Hi Dear 406 tech boffins!

I have a 2.0 110 HDI GLX Estate. 138,000 miles young and currently adding over 3000 miles per month! :cheesy:

I quite fancy trying a slightly taller top gear ratio.

Can anyone help me with the following:

Does the 2.2 136 HDI run a taller top gear ratio? (the 110 runs 28mph/1000rpm)
Is the higher ratio achieved by...
a) taller final drive ratio?
or
b) different 5th gear pair?
or
c) Both?

I am trying to decide whether to swap the whole gearbox from a 2.2 into my 2.0 OR whether to try to swap the 5th gear set ( these seem to be accessible under the end cover with the 'box in situ in the car)

Thanks for your advice.

Peter

AFAIK the 110 & 2.2 share the same ML5 box, with an overall ratio of about 31mph/1000 in 5th

2.0 HDi 90's have the BE3 or 4 'box, with a top gear ration of around 28 mph/1000 - least that was my understanding. :?

BE4, which does indeed sit behind trucks (assuming 55mph, speedo says around 59mph) at around 1950rpm

My Uncles C5 has a 2.0HDi DW10TD but 16v head and his is 6 speed if you wanted to be the first to try a 6 speed box?

That sounds interesting.
Is it a current C5 or a conversion of the 2.0 HDI 110?

My 110 has a top gear of 29mph/1000 as per here:
http://www.theaa.com/staticdocs/pdf/car ... UPDATE.PDF

Recently verified with a V-max run. 116mph on my sat nav GPS and I was showing 4000 rpm om rev counter.
(speedo was showing 122)
Interestingly, 116mph is the most normally quoted V-max for the 110 HDI estate.
It coincides with 4000 rpm where peak power is produced.
This suggests that Peugeot selected the 5th gear ratio as the optimum "perfect top" when specifying this car.

If the 2.2 gives 31mph/1000 I would regard that as worth swapping for quiter cruising and slightly better fuel consumption.
Some sacrifice to acceleration and possibly top speed possible but not my main concern.

Anyone know if it was achieved with different gear sets or a different final drive ratio?

Would a box from a 2.2 HDI go straight in?
Clutch splines, gear shift cables, etc any problem?

I can source box from a 2.2 HDI Coupe relatively easily.

Thanks
Peter
