Checked the coolant last night and it's basically oil in the header tank, called round at my mechanic mates house and he reckons it's oil cooler seals failure rather than HG due to the amount of oil in there and no other signs of HG failure evident.
He said he'd flush it through and by pass the cooler all together.
I'm happy to try this to confirm it is the cooler but how long do I run the car without it?

I'm not aware of this engine having an oil cooler

It's the unit with two water pipes on it that the filter screws onto.
OP, flush it through, remove the cooler unit altogether (else the oil will just flow out of the water pipe connections) and join the two water pipes together.
Just be careful not to hammer it around as your oil won't have the same cooling effect. Once you know it's the problem you can replace the cooler.

It'd be fine at this time of year in fact it will likely take longer to warm up from cold as the oil-to-water heat exchanger helps to heat the oil until it reaches 80 deg C (a handy benefit) then as the oil climbs to 100 deg C it 'dumps' heat into the cooling system.
