Blown turbo pipe.

Post by stealthe »

Driving along this morning, changed up 2nd-3rd, and there's a pop and I'm leaving a black cloud behind. The lower intercooler pipe has burst.
Now, I've got two spares, but before I just put one on and see if it goes pop should I be checking anything?

Seems a fairly common occurence, (at least on HDi 110's & 136's - maybe others). If it was mine, I'd stick it on and see what happens, possibly being a bit more wary initially.

- what engine is it?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

 110 HDI.

I don't rag mine around, so I'm going with the stick it on and see approach.
I figure the things about 10 years old and contamination/heat/cold etc have probably caused the failure.
If I get time I'll stick the diagnostic kit on it and see if anything shows up.

welly & puggy both had their's go......

If you change it & don't get an EML, then I'd say all's good. (As the boost is controlled by the ECU, you could get overpressure from a dodgy solenoid valve or vacuum issue, but it will complain if this is the case).

No warning lights before it went, and I can keep it below 1800 rpm most of the time I'm driving anyway.
I figure that major overpressure would light the eml and lesser faults should be flagged in planet.
I'll still have spares to have another go over the weekend if it fails again tomorrow!
If I find anything on planet I'll post it here.

Slap it on, clear the codes and only worry about any that come back. 8)

I'm almost sure that planet has a built in random code generator, just so that the stealers can say 'We found some faults.....' before trying to empty your bank account!

Completely unnecessary! (You've already been gang-raped with the cost of simply plugging it in).

Below 1800 rpm, criminal.
1999 406 HDi 2.0 110 GTX Estate. 48k when bought, now 150K. Second owner, I've covered over 100k in it.
Clutch changed @110k, bottom pulley changed, cam belt changed, EGR blanked, cat removed, front springs changed.
