Hi there got a intermittent noise on my petrol 2.0 406. car has only done 60000 miles and seems to have been looked after. The noise is intermitent and does sound like a noisy tappet. i presume these are hydraulic? is it worth investigating further or should i just ignore it.

Thanks matt

If your car is due an oil change, change it.

Give it a good Italian tune up afterwards, sometimes this can settle down a noisy hydraulic tappet.

I'm sure I read somewhere there's an additive for sticky hydraulic tappets, it's probably snake oil but it might be worth a try if the oil change/Italian tune up combo don't do the trick (and I'd change the oil again afterwards too)

Thanks for the replies sorry to sound thick but what is a italian tune up ! Its only done around 3000 since the last service but this was 12 months ago i have the filter kit ready to go was wondering if its worth putting a thinner oil in for the summer and see how it goes ! what do people recommend i was thinking use the oil in the warm climate list in the manual.

Thanks Matt

An Italian tune up means to give the car a good thrashing up the motorway or give it some revs.

You could try some 5w40 fully synthetic oil.

i dont think putting a different oil in just for the summer is a good idea. stick with the same no matter what the weather is.

That is rather the point of multigrade oil after all

I know this sounds daft but check you're spark plugs are tight. Happens quite reularly, and the noise of a loose plug sounds very tappety.

for noisy tappets iused to throw half a pint of deisel in with the oil , then run it for amin or 2 and dump the oil and change filter .

some will say it can knacker an engine but it worked for me
