Hey folks. got a little request from a collegue at work with a massive MPG problem. Its not a pug, so please bear with me.

He has a 1.8 Litre 20V Automatic SE edition VW Passat, on a 1999 T Reg plate.

Currently, he reckons for a full tank of petrol (?60 to fill, so in the 60 to 70 litre region) he is only getting 360 to 380 miles out of it.
Also, a 20 mile city/country drive zaps ?5 of fuel, easy.
I know with my 406, I can get 400+ miles, up to 500 with ?60 worth of fuel.

Any of you engine nuts got a clue if this is normal... or perhaps if he has a problem?

?60.00 = 13.33 Gallons @ ?4.50 per Gallon.

360 miles / 13.33 Gallons = 27 MPG About bang on for a 2.0 Auto.

He should have run my Mazda MX6 he would have gone no more than 260 miles on ?60.00

What he should do is BRIM the tank, drive as usual for a week, the BRIm the tank again this will give an acurate miles over fuel-used MPG, your just guessing at it using the fuel gauge really.

Assuming Weltons figures are right 27mpg in a 1.8 is prob pretty good tbh. I dunno what ppl get in there 406 petrols but in petrol cars I've had Astra 1.4/1.6 both about 30mpg, Vectra 1.8 SXi 25mpg if I drove like a nun otherwise lucky to get 20mpg.

Even in my HDi 33mpg is about me normal, but as I have a knackered shoulder atm I'm driving a bit more slowly and been getting about 37mpg.

tell him to get a diesel My 2.1TD does 40mpg with my "normal" driving and only goes below that if I absolutely thrash the engine everywhere (down to about 35mpg). Motorway is 42-46mpg at steady 80.

27mpg in a 1.8 sucks in my opinion, even with it being an auto.

My D9 2l coupe does 13 road miles and 3 city miles each way to work every day, I don't drive slow but I'm no nutter either.

I get 36.7 mpg nearly every week with the aircon on.

Sounds like more than I'd get in my 2.0 turbo.

What realy surprised me is that I'm getting better MPG with my 2 litre than he is with 1.8.

And I'm not the most economical driver, but not nuts either.

i get 30/35ish mpg out of my 1.8 but i do drive quite carefully most of the time cos i scream around all day in my van so its nice to potter around enjoying the comfort, thats not to say i dont "give it a hiding" on a fairly regular basis to keep everything clean you understand so 27 to 30 is average. And im not surprised you get better mpg blue cos you got the same weight of car as 1.8 and more horses so they dont have to work as hard, it was the same with cortina's the 1.6 was more thirsty than the 2.0 , i reckon near 30 mpg isnt bad

something must be badly wrong with my new 2.0 406, it cost me ?60 to fill it up and i only got 230 miles out of it!
and most of that was cruising at 70mph

A 2 litre Passat should average 33 mpg provding its the FSi model. I agree with Welton. Its about right for an auto.

So how come your still knocking around in a hire car? your crash was ages ago.
