run out of fuel

had the unfortunate experience of reunning out of diesel this morn on m18
calkled one off mates from work to fetch me a gallon.put fuel in tank and turned ignition but it did not fire up the mfd came up with econmy mode had to get rac to tow me off motorway.my car is a 2002 hdi both me and the rac guy could`nt find the priming buld
any ideas

If it's Bosch it won't have one. It *should* self-prime. Try disconnecting & charging the battery.

battery on charge ,is that why it would`nt fire if the battery not vup to scratch

I dunno, it might be something to do with the battery on its way but hopefully being disconnected for a while will reset the economy merde.

Right turn the ignition on, leave it for about 30s, switch it back off, switch it back on a leave for 30s etc etc. Do this 5/6 times, this should prime the system before you crank.

Just what I was about to suggest
Economy mode means the ignition/aux has been on for 30 minutes without the engine running. It causes the BSI to shut down non-essential systems to prevent the battery from draining. It does not affect anything that would prevent you from starting the car.
