Fuel consumption on a 2.1td

Post by StefanYHU »

What should I expect from a tank of fuel?

I am currently getting at best 300 miles to a tank if even that.....this doesn't seem great to me. What do you fella's think? Is there anything I can do to improve it?

thanks in advance

Well, I get about 650-700.

Tank holds at least 16 gallons, which should get you better than 600 miles at the 39 mpg 'combined' figure they publish for your car.

I get roughly 500miles to a tank on mine, I think it works out at roughly 40mpg. I do a 40 mile commute to work on a mix of country roads, A roads and a small amount of urban driving. I'm also quite heavy with the right foot.

300 sounds very poor unless you're driving everywhere flat out!

empty the boot :D :D

dont no how you get it that low as i get that on just over half a tank, never filled the tank as ive not got big pockets[and anyway less weight in the tank gives you more mpg]

Are you loosing any fuel, leaky pump or injector leak off pipes?

I have no idea when last she was serviced, she does drive ok, no stuttering etc.

What I will say is, the turbo whistles, now is this normal or is this a boost leek somewhere?

Is there much invloved when servicing these engines?

cheers

Mine made a racket after I had an after-market cat put on it, so it's not necessarily a leak.

i usually get around 450 miles to the tank on mine, roughly 50 miles to the tenner, which i thoght was crap.

right now my exhaust has suffered a car meets overflowing ford incident, and last night i covered only 57 miles for 20 of diesel

my turbo makes a whistle, i wouldnt say its leaking,, just check all the fuel pipes going into and out the fuel pump, you must have a leak

does it ever struggle to start ? after being stood over night ?

it sounds like you have a leak then, if the fuel system isnt sealed diesel syphons back to the tank when its meant to stay up near the pump, check the fuel filter lid ive had air getting in there ,

in the morning before you start the car lift the bonnet and prime the fuel sytem with the pump, its located at the side of the drivers side strut , pump it till it goes tight, then try start it should start straight away .

thats if its an air leak you have got, i had this problem before on my 1.9 (similar engine to your 2.1) it does sound like you have a leak somewere tho, you need to check all the pipes , probably with the car running so its pumping fuel , and watch out for fuel dripping

My 1.9 normal travels 450 miles from full to red light, then I put 60 litres in til the pump clicks off. My reckoning gives me an average just under 34mpg for virtually all town driving. it goes up to about 37-38 with a good dose of motorway thrown in.
I also had an air leak in the fuel system which was cured(bodged) using a non return valve between the pump and the filter housing, this didn't affect mpg's tho as fuel just drained back into the tank. As already stated look for leaks, change the leak off pipes if you see fuel around the base of the injectors, these pipes get brittle with age and only costs a couple of quid for a length of pipe.
Nice fresh oil and some clean filters will help power and mpg's but if you're only getting low 20's you've either got a leak or the right hand pedal is welded to the floor !!

One final thought, the fuel gauge on mine is a complete waste of time, red light is always 10 litres left but anything above that is anyones guess. I just fill her until it stops, drive until red light and work out mpg's from that. How much fuel does it take to fill her back up from the warning light ? I presume you've got the same size tank as me which is 70 litres plus a bit in the pipes.

putting a non return valve is an option but it would be better finding the leak 8)
