110 hdi remap

Post by grasmere59 »

I'm going to have a remap done on my 110 hdi in a few weeks and i'm starting to get a bit worried as a mate who is a mechanic says the engine will be overstressed and will probably lead to head gasket failure due to higher turbo boost pressure etc,the car has done 110k,any advice would be greatly appreciated. :?

Had it over 4 years and my mate had it done when he owned the car couple of years previous and no issues at all

The people in the know whom I've discussed this with reckon the 2.0 HDi engine is capable of handling 180bhp ok. I wouldn't expect you'd have any problems remapping it to the 140bhp (or thereabouts) that a standard 110 HDi should make.

Aren't the latest 2.0HDi's running 163bhp as standard????????

I know my mate's dad has a 407 and the 1.6HDi in that has a reputed 110bhp

I think a lot of the extra power from the newer HDis is down to them being a 16v engine as opposed to the 8v 2.0 HDis in the 406.

i dont doubt the hdi could do more than 110, its actually not much from 2 litres, and i do think its a bit little for a car the size of the 406. And vag tdi's seem to get remapped all the time with no problems. I havent had mine remapped yet, whats the story with the insurance?

Thanks for the replies,i reckon it should be o.k. as i'm not going to thrash it about just want to up the bhp a bit as i intend to tow with it on the odd occasion,as for the insurance as it can't be seen like a "bolt on" upgrade what they don't know won't hurt them if you know what i mean

I did my hdi 110 a few weeks ago myself. Pulls lovely, although mine could do with the map adjusting so open up the window of power from lower down as it behaves similar to a petrol turbo at the minute.

p.s mine's on 138k ;)

I tried earlier trying to discern where the power comes in on mine
Just seems to have power all the way from 1500rpm and up

Was having a bit of a race with an A3 TDi earlier

Just checked on google and says they have 168bhp

the a3 diesel can go from 90bhp up to 170, depends on what letters are red in the tdi badge. But some people say the golf is a better car than an a3 i disagree, the a3 seems to stand out a bit better than a golf which is as unique and interesting as a grain of sand on a beach.

Sorry to pick you up on this but you may regret the non-declaration if you have a claim, it is not hard for an insurance assessor to spot a remap. If you have a claim, God forbid run someone over for example, you may majorly regret that decision.

I realise that you should declare this but how would they know? Do they hook the cars up to a computer to compare the map to stock?

I'd think it's more a case of if the car's scraping the ground with immense wheels and/or after an accident involving excessive speed.

Btw making modifications to your car without telling the insurers is illegal and possible even dangerous and the 406oc does not condone or encourage such behaviour

define a modification. Because things like the extra lights in the boot, footwell and first aid box are modifications ive done, then the strut brace. does any of these things mean defining the car as modified?

It is not at all hard for a trained engineer to tap into the cars' ecu and read the max boost readings.. of course you may get away with it, you would if you didn't have a claim, but as I say, if you are involved in a fatal collision or even a high value claim, or even a low value claim, the insurers can and will do some very careful investigations.
