406 turbo exec, stalling whilst idle, loss of power.

Post by Gracchi »

Hi, been having few probs with me 406,

first the engine cuts out when starting in the morning untill the engine is warm.

over heating alot, temp rises alot veryy fast in short journys, (not traffic~).

also the car seems to have lost alot of boost,it revs freely in neutral , but loss of power under strok/drive.

went to leeds from leicester the other day, with air con , and power seemed to max out at 90 mph.

sorry about the english , hope can find some help, thank you.

Could be the stepper motor which regulates the air/fuel mixture.
This can cause erratic idling, stalling when depressing the clutch for a period of time like shifting gears when drawing up to lights.
The stepper might need a good clean out, or replacement.

Stick the aircon on, if it still overheating then the worst case is head gasket failiure. This would also explain the loss of boost.

You might not be firing on all cylinders ;) Honestly. Perhaps your coil pack is on its way out.
Also, check your exhaust is not blocked in any way.

If something's up with the coolant system (ie if it's empty) I've found the engine goes into a limp-home mode totally devoid of power. Should pop up a dashboard warning light though...

Dumb question, but have you checked your coolant level?

thermostat??? if this is playing up that might explain the up and down temp readings and power loss.

I had a similar problem with an old Rover 214i I had... would rev fine on the drive, but as soon as I applied any power on the road it would stall and die, lots of noise just no power. Turned out mine was a blocked cat, found out by getting under the car and giving it a shake, could hear chunks of the ceramic rattling. I did a quick fix... took the cat off, smashed all the ceramic out of it with a steel bar, then put the empty cat case back on the car. Suddenly, I had power again!!! Sold it quick before it was MOT time too
