Just got my 406 1.9td back from my mechanic mate, the power steering packed up last week and whilst repairing it he found the bottom crank pulley had cracked
and become loose. I dont know what came first but it has damaged the mounting to the crank. He has repaired the best he can but wont gtee i wont happen again.

That's what killed my 504Diesel a few years back. I'd rebuilt the engine about 9 months before and it was running like a train. Then I started to hear a funny noise and took it to a Peugeot mechanic. He said it was the brake pump so I bought a new one for $350 and fitted it next day. A week later the crank pulley cracked properly, sending a large chunk of metal into the timing chain and the rest was history.
You'll need to have the keyway fixed up so it can't loosen again or it's a disaster waiting to happen. Hell it might even be worth welding the pulley on if it's that bad.
Maybe there's an expert way to fix it. Perhaps some of that really serious loctite?
