I have a high idle speed of about 950rpm on my "new" 98? (M reg) 406 diesel. Any ideas on the correct speed and how to adjust it? Thanks Team.

Hello and welcome to club mate,

not sure on the D8 model (pre 1999) but my D9 2000 w reg idles at about 930-950 as standard, i thought the same when i got it that the idle was too high but it seems this is as intended from the factory and all is normal, but give it a while and somebody will be along to confirm whether this is right on your motor or not.

Regards

Polski

Hi there, welcome aboard.

1.9 or 2.1? The 1.9 has a fast idle device that's probably stuck, the 2.1 has no adjustments this side of a sledgehammer.

Giday Guys, thanks for your warm welcome and info. You response prompted me to go & have a good look at the car (I was given it free to a good home last night) and I see that it's actually a 405 model! (please dont boot me out of the club!)

Anyway engine specs show that idle speed should be 750 on a 1.9 engine. Still unable to find a throttle screw or adjustment device; any more advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Neil

Hi Everyone,
My 1.9 406 now idles at this speed.(950) The ecu controlled fast idle system is u/s, but a quick(and free) fix is to disconnect the vac lines to the fast idle and egr valves, and connect direct to the idle control diaphram unit. You have fast idle on start up which drops to normal as soon as the vac builds up. Also, you dont feed the engine exhaust crud, which should extend its life!

Nuffield

Thanks for the info; I'll have a look at that and see what happens. If it remains, I will just have to live with the problem until I get the 406 in Sept.
