Give the bottom of the fuel tank .. a wallop with palm of your hand or rubber
Mallet,
And see if the lift pump fires up afterwards,

If so replacement lift pump time,

tried this but still no joy !! think I might just replace the pump anyway as I know its got diesel in the tank (walked to local petrol station 1/2 mile away and got 5 litres to make sure that wasn't problem)

starting to tear my hair out now lol

hi I know its a stupid question but what position should the fuel pump cut off switch be in ? that's the little red rubber covered switch on passenger strut . also I don't seem to have power to the pump so was wondering if there is anyway to bypass the cut off switch?

It plugs in on two contacts by the look of it so.
Unplug and bridge with a suitable peice of wire or bridge with a fuse,

That's just to test mind, if the switch is faulty, I'd recommend replacing it
There identicle across the pug /Citroen range,

right I tried a bit of wire jumping the connections on the cut off switch and pump didn't work but I got a reading on my fuel gauge saying I was 3/4 full which I know is a lie as I only had about £10 diesel in the tank, so I have ordered a new fuel pump off of ebay from a bosch dealer for £116 hope this does the trick will keep you all posted on wether it works or not.
