It now seems to work fine but needs about 11 clicks of the handbrake. I can see no adjustment on the handbrake lever only inside the drums and at the back of the car where all 3 cables meet. This has been adjusted with the handbraked released so the wheels turn. We shall see on my retest.
11 clicks is bang on for models with drum rear brakes. :)

ALL 406s have rear drums for the handbrake
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

The nut is there in the middle of the pic, the red thing is the handle of a kitchen knife.
That's not there on mine

However, servicebox does list 2 handbrake lever+cable assemblies, one of which adjusts at the top, the other adjusting at the bottom. Apparently. Wonder if mine's under the car... I'll have a look tonight when I've got the front in the air to do the brakes

I ain't touching the rear adjuster though.... it's seized solid and when I took a wire brush to it last time, I removed off some of the thread it was so corroded

I'm looking at the diagram now, it appears as if they both have some sort of nut at the front, either a nut with a washer (71) or this "clip nut" (10), which is what Panda's talking about I reckon. This "adjuster at the top/base" must be around the handbrake as there doesn't appear to be any other adjuster between where it goes through the floor and the rear one on either cable. If the adjuster on the back of yours is fragged then I reckon this adjuster is the one to go for - if it has enough travel - failing that it's money pit time again :(

Indeedly, all have drum handbrakes, but not drum rear brakes. I read his post as he had drum rear brakes, like mine does. :?

Then noticed his sig and saw it was an HDi... meh.
