Yeah things seem to get pricey when there's a DMF involved :/
Also I'd imagine it's harder to work on something like a Picasso compared to something with a long traditional bonnet like a 406, though I'm just guessing here (I'm no mechanic!). Those kinds of designs seem like a compromise of compactness and safety over accessibility.

I have to admit that I'm grateful for the amount of space in the engine bay compared to say, my old Daihatsu Grandmove 1.6, that engine bay was particularly "compact" shall we say!ZilogJones wrote:Yeah things seem to get pricey when there's a DMF involved :/

After popping the gearchange linkage off, I (eventually) managed to get the transmission out to expose the clutch.
I spent about 4 hours trying to maneuver the transmission out, failing until offered a hand by the friendly lad down the road. I took the weight and he "steered" the transmission from above - and it was out within five minutes.
It just goes to show - we get by as a species through team work much better than without.
Inspecting the old clutch release bearing, the point of failure and source of squealing is quite apparent.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of my old clutch release bearing on my 406 against the new one in the clutch kit:

and the wear in the pressure plate:

I think that I may have bent a couple of the fingers trying to get the transmission out.
I'll get on with fitting the new clutch at lunchtime (yup, I'm working from home and repairing the car on weekends, lunchtimes and evenings)
and let you know how I get on.
