banging/clunking

Post by ncd72 »

hi all - could be a common prob this i'm not sure - when going over bumps or potholes there's a dull banging or clunking coming from what i believe is the front passenger side - somewhere around the wheel area from what i can gather although i don't seem to feel it through the steering - could it be a bush/wishbone or something like that needs attention?

thanks

Hi Neil

There's a few causes; antirollbar bushes, antirollbar drop links, the bushes in the top engine mount can be badly perished, bottom engine mount.
In my experience I changed all of the above which were pretty badly worn, but... the cause was the big rubber bush that screws into the offside wheelarch area that the top engine mount bolts onto; it was slightly unscrewed and you'd never spot it unless you removed the top mount. I'll take a piccy later.

For the antirollbar bush & link yes; but there's no top mount on the nearside.

the anti roll links are the most common, just grab hold of it and see if it moves around a little (it runs from near the bottom of the shocker up onto anti roll bar).

cost about £15 for the part and prob half hour labour to change. I wouldn't (and didn't) change both sides.

I bought mine from Eurocarparts, I can't remember how much I payed but they're not dear.
It may be a pain but I'd definitely change both sides! You don't want to leave a worn part on one side of the car!
I'd change the bushes while you're at it too as you need to remove the drop links to get them out.
