If it starts ok when you lock & unlock the car it must be the immobiliser playing silly buggers!
Next time you can't get it to start have a look at the keypad and check if the red or green LED is lit

Edit: Course I don't know whether yours is a D8 or D9! Must be immobiliser though.

I seem to remember someone saying the pick up coil for the immobiliser chips can give this sort of grief but I can't find the thread...

Mines a D8 with the keypad.

When sitting in the drivers seat it is down by your right knee, it's a small pull down flap that you have to open to get to the fuse release catch for the interer fuses....if you've ever changed a fuse and not noticed it, you don't have one... :P

I've noticed some early D8's have them and some don't, but I don't think this means you don't have an immobiliser, its just is an auto one instead of the keypad.....I think :? Anyone else back me up on that? I think it's because when your key goes out of sync, you have to go to the stealers to get them re-programmed instead of being able to do it with the keypad....unless you read the threads on here.

When you try and start it up and it doesn't fire, is there a continuious beeping comming from the dashboard? If so, that's the keypad stopping it. If not..... I'm not sure why it's not starting, sorry.

Hope this helps

I'd say you don't have it, else you'd have to type the code in every time you started the car. I had a similar problem in mine where the engine would turn over but it felt like it wasn't pumping any fuel. All I had to do was take the key out of ignition, wait a few seconds and then try it. Normally started the 2nd time.
