xud starting

Post by Nightshade »

Hi guys,

My xud has started intermittently not wanting to start. When she does go I get a cloud of black smoke. Once started, she runs fine.

It happens when warm or cold.
Any idea where to start?

Black smoke is improperly combusted diesel, perhaps the glow plugs? The XUD really does need them to start properly, even when warm.

Yup, probably 1 out of the 4 plugs is kaput. Do you have a multimeter? If you do, check that they are getting 11-12v with ign on. If there is power, turn ign off and remove the cable that joins the plugs together. Check each individual one with the meter, this should point out the suspect plug.

Whip the plug out and stick 12v to the top and negative to the body to double check, then replace the barsteward with a good dose of copper grease on the thread :)

Only fit Bosch or NGK, (unless you enjoy doing it regularly).

Difficult starting in the mornings and I'd be looking for air in the fuel system, never hurts to give it a bleed.
Crack the fuel union below the pump and pump the bulb until the air bubbles stop.

Glow plug change is theoretically easy however....
From the gearbox end plugs 1 & 2 are easy, plug 3 is fiddly, plug 4 is a bitch!
I only changed 3 on mine and it started first turn of the key after that.
