First off this is just my musing as my car is already done with a nice stainless system that I'm planning to keep.
It occurred to me that MoT testers are highly unlikely to know what kind of emissions system was fitted to a particular car and I've never seen one checking a manual or database so....
From the limited info on service box it would 'appear' the 110 flexi section has a similar 'flange' (snigger) to the 2.2 where it bolts to the turbo. If the diameter is the same couldn't you just blank the pressure pipes out of sight, tuck any additional wiring out of the way, remove additive tank etc.. and fit a 110 exhaust to the 2.2 leaving it looking like a factory fitted system.
Over all length of the exhaust must be pretty similar for both saloon and estate.
I can't see any particular advantage in doing this unless of course they work out a way to test if your DPF has been hollowed out or tin worm has attacked the pipes so this is more of a 'can it be done' rather than a future plan.
It all works out in my head but real life is rarely as straight forward and obviously I'm assuming the engine mapping will have been done to suit.
Just a bored Sunday afternoon thought and may help a forum member in the future.

Hmmm, I believe the 2.2Hdi has the same exhaust diameter as the V6, which is a big bigger than the 90/110 variants.
I like your thinking though - and the MOT testers I have been chatting with have said that they are not too strict with cars built before 2008 when the emissions thing was standard.

I think the 2.2 has the same size front pipes as a V6, but a smaller diameter pipe on the back box.
(If you look at the exhaust clamps on service box, the front one's 70-odd mm and the joint between the middle pipe and back box is 66 or thereabouts, can't remember which one is used for the joint between the back of the FAP canister and the middle pipe).
I was thinking of fitting a V6 back box.....
FWIW I think the 110 exhaust would fit.
All 406 exhausts are effectively the same length, I believe the coupe/saloon/estate all have different lengths of tail pipe sticking out of the back box, but are otherwise identical.
