ok thanks for that.

I'm taking it to a trusted local garage tomorrow who'll do a diagnostic for me.

MPG definatelly below 50 at the moment.

But car 'seems' to be running ok once started. Maybe a very slight 'hunting' or 'irregular' beat at idle? (but only very slight - enough to give an 'odd' vibration that I feel through the steering wheel, pedals and gearstick)

Hi, diagnostic done yesterday. Nothing came up. And, ironically, car started first turn of key.

I am baffled and am losing confidence fast. Mechanic was equally baffled.

I am thinking fuel system for some reason. I will get a fresh fuel filter and fill it with fuel cleaner to see if it makes any diference.

Would an ECU reset be worth trying? If so, how would I do that?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Ok - getting somewhere possibly.

Just done a BSI reset, and the starting is much worse after doing that, or after disconnecting the battery for any length of time.

This to me indicates electrical/ecu moreso than fuel problem.

Anyone able to shed any light?

Nothing came up on a diagnostic.

Hi all, the symptoms are getting worse.

Is there an idiot's guide to test the crank sensor anywhere?

I would be grateful for any help in this.

Thanks

Have you checked the injectors yet?

There is a run through of how to check a crank sensor in here....I know the engine is petrol, but the test is the same.

Thanks Jasper.

The injectors are fine as far as I can tell. It has also been through a diagnostic at my local trustworthy garage.

I'm hoping it's crank sensor fault and a simple case of replacing it.

The new crank sensor arrived by post this morning. Is this an easy job? Anyone have any advice or tips on how to go about replacing.

I'll test the old one as per the link above before fitting the new one.

Right, changed the sensor.

No change at all in the starting stakes, although it seems to me that the car runs smoother? Maybe 'placebo' effect.

Starting to lose patience with this car now so it's time to move it on.

Needs this starting issue sorted, and a reluctor ring passenger side for the ABS.

62K miles on the clock, '53 plate, towbar and electrics, Executive - fully loaded extras all apart from full leather (has half leathers).

Very good condition otherwise. Not sure what the value is so any pointers or any interest please le me know.

I would do a leak off test on injectors again just to double check...

Also remove the fuel line coming from the tank from the fuel filter and stick the line/pipe into a coke bottle. Turn the ignition on and you should get some fuel being pumped out for a few seconds.

Ok, car wouldn't start this morning at all.

Fuel coming through ok - checked at all fuel pipes I could find in the engine.

Beginning to think starter motor might be the culprit - not spinning fast enough?

When I connected a 240v powered battery booster with 'hot start' it started ok. Without it, a bit of a pain. Could this be a starter motor on the way out? Certainly it doesn't seem to want to turn as quickly as I'd like it to.

Have left the car in a trusted garage now to look at it when they can over the next couple of days to investigate.

Whatever the outcome I'm going to sell it. I don't need a large family car any more so a small or medium size petrol car will do for me.

Get a jump lead and put it on the negative post on battery and then connect the other end to somewhere on engine to
Earth,

It might be a bad earth

Worth checking before replacing starter motor
