I think that is the one he's got. Managed to read my 99 hdi, his audi a4, didn't work with my dad 97 vectra thou.

From memory it gives the code and brief explanation, can reset/clear faults etc. Not the worlds best but certainly worth having for about the cost of paying someone to do it!

Thanks! Did the one your brother had come from the same seller in China? Has anyone else successfully used one of these on an HDI about the same age as mine (99,T)?

OK, thanks for checking. Seems to be plenty on Ebay, not just from China!

i would like to point out, that in theory this shouldnt work, as the 406 didnt become eobdII compliant untill 2002, and even then that was only for the petrol models, the diesel's didnt become eobdII compliant untill 2004, so it shouldnt work, im not saying mbell666 is a liar, as it may well work, but like i said 'in theory' it shouldnt :|

What protocol do the earlier (pre '04) HDIs use? I've just found a link to another code reader which is listed by the manufacturer as being suitable for 406HDI models from 1999. If I can find the link again I'll post it! (EDIT) OK, found it now, here it is!

Just turned 200,000 miles now, and no nearer with this problem! I must admit I've been pre-occupied with other things, so this has gone onto a back burner. The engine management light never goes off now, and there is no sudden loss of power - it's totally lacking in power all the time. Maximum revs. seems to be about 2,250, but it takes a long time to get there! I recently had to stop at the bottom of a steep hill to let a double deck bus get past - it was obvious he would get up the hill more quickly than I would. "Economy Mode Active" has appeared on the screen on just 2 occasions - both while listening to the radio with the ignition off. Other than that, I still get "Electronic Ignition Fault" for 15 secs or so when the engine is first started. Top speed is about 60mph on the flat, and very little more down hills. Still haven't pursued the fault code reader. Anyone have any new ideas? Thanks!
