Hi guys,
Recently my aircon compressor has become very noisy, aircon still works and the air is as cold as always, but when it's on I can feel a rhythmic vibration through the steering wheel (I know it's the compressor, it only does it with the aircon on, and I feel a definite thunk through the wheel when the compressor kicks in), and when I turn it off I can hear the compressor slowing down, making a decreasing grinding noise till it finally stops with a rattle. Is this a symptom of low gas, or a shagged compressor? Does anyone have a rough idea of a price to replace it?
Cheers
Dave

This is DEFINATELY low on gas.
This is exactly what happened to me, and you also hear a rattly noise from behind the dash which rises and falls along with engine revs.
The compressor is 'scavanging' for gas and makes a grinding/rattly noise.
DO NOT USE the a/c any further to save wear on the compressor (it's expensive) you should consider getting the system tested for leaks but be prepared to be faced with a new condensor radiator @ £300.00
Incidentaly, my compressor is now silent again after my new condensor and regass.
