The only benefit to fitting a dump-valve on a diesel is the "tshhhhhhhhhhh" noise, there's no perfromance benefit at all. As mentioned a few posts up, to make one work on a diesel you need to fit a few extra bits to it as it is controlled by electronics mostly. The way it works on a petrol engine, is that when the butterfly valve in the throttle body closes it vents the excess boost out of the dump-valve so the turbo doesn't stall, and there are two types of valve, re-circulating or atmospheric, re-circulating vents back into the airbox, atmospheric vents directly out the top of the valve into, yep you guessed it...............the atmosphere  There's no butterfly on a diesel hense the need for an electronic gizmo to open it when the throttle is closed, it involves a switch or two and a little wiring but it's fairly easy to do.
