the solenoid is now working! the two wires coming from the solenoid (one black one green) are both live! and i'd wired up the black to earth, so effectivley shorting the circuit  ive now blanked off the black and wired the other live to live on ignition.

now ive just gotta wait for the battery to charge  oh and theres the cold start ive got to sort out too, obviously i cant run that from a live ignition, shall i wire in a switch and relay on a seperate circuit? i think i better read some more.

If your runnign lucas injectors and lines then you will have issues as they don't match up and the lucas injectors will fire too early. Your better off getting Bosch everything! Scour a scrappy if I was you!
Make sure theres a live to the solinoid just above the injector outlets. Also undo one of the pipes going to the injector and make sure theres fuel flowing out of it!
These engines will run with the pump 90 degrees out! They won't run well but they will run!

ive got bosch injectors in now, ive also rebent all the fuel lines back to their original positions because the pump puts the fuel out of the same point as the lucas one, if that makes sense? so the pulley key is pointing at the same injector when in its locked position(the same as the lucas pump)!!! it now runs if its towed but i cant turn the pump anymore to advance/retard it. there is fuel now ive done the solenoid etc. going back in the garage now...pump off and move the studs to the other holes so i can get the timing right...i think. if this isnt right then im really confused!! thanks

well...ive now turned the pumps pulley round by 10 teeth instead of bending the lines for the 3rd time. and now i have the same problem as before...in that it is only fireing on cyclinder no.1, so i check the plugs and 3 out of 4 dont work. which means i didnt even need to change the pump in the first place!! why why why did i not check the rest of the plugs before instead of assuming the rest were fine  anyway i'll give a full write up when ive done in detail with pics so anyone else attempting it with as little knowledge as me wont have my problems. thanks for all your advise and hopefully it should start up tomorrow when the new plugs are in! cheeers :)

Just cought up on this thread and you have made a few errors,
In the picture you posted of the fuel lines they are right,
the 406 pump is not good for this convertion (I know I tried this in the past and you will never get the timming right), too much electronic stuff, swap it for one from a 405/early Xantia or 306, anything thats not got an EGR valve,
use the injectors and fuel lines from the same car, they must be Bosch ones.
Start with the right pump ect and it's an easyish job.
If you remove donor the pump on it's bracket and don't move it then the timming will be close enought not to worry about it.

ahh never!! that makes sense to me now. at the moment it runs with hardly any power and a lot of white smoke. i was just about to play with the timming some more but....

is there no way of just removing the EGR valve? dumb question probs. sounds like its coming back off then. thanks for your post, its saved me a lot more faffing around.

That looks to be the right one, just check with the seller that the car has no EGR.
Thats a good price as the injectors cost more than that to get them recoditioned,
see if he will mark the pump to braket position and chuck the braket in as well it'll save you a lot of bother setting the pump timing up.
While you've got the pump out change the glow plugs as it's much easier when you can get to them and you need good plugs when running veg.
It's also worth doing this mod to the filter housing

and that site will tell you all you need to know about running veg.
