ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
Hi all, I have a problem, I own an 406 03' new model.
the problem is I usually smell gasoline odor from the right front side of the car, sometimes the smell get inside the cabin and it was very bad. I search it over there and found a small pipe, when I checked it on the part diagram, I found that there's a small vent pipe from the fuel tank that run from the boot of the car to the front side at the wheel house/inner fender near the firewall.
the diagram is like this
as u can see, there are a pipe from near the fuel filler, run to the boot, up to the C pillar and extent to the firewall end near the inner fender, My question, is there anyway to reduce the odor? or should I cut the pipe instead? what is the function of that pipe? thx for your help

Re: ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
It looks like it's to take the fuel vapour elsewhere. The can on the end of the pipe is probably filled with carbon, the parts diagram just shows a pipe coming off of it and going nowhere but I'd think it goes to the inlet somewhere. I think I'd check to see if it's come off, it'll be letting frech aitr in past the air flow meter and could be affecting the air/fuel mixture. I suppose at a pinch you could just cut the pipe under the wheelarch. Pull the arch liner off and stick the end of the pipe up as high as possible.

Re: ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
Thanks steve, I found that the pipe just end in the wheel arch and not connected to the "can" . It's only a free end of the pipe. I think because my car is not manufactured at French and I dont see any can there. I dont know the part number of the can. Let me know if I you have the same carbon can, i think that carbon can filter will solve the odor ya ? or what if I cut the pipe from near the point at the fuel filler, is that Okey ?

I think the Carbon Canister has gone missing (maybe an accident repair?).
You must not cut or blank off any vent pipes from a fuel tank. Modern fuel tanks run a slight negative pressure to recover fumes to the cannister and if you block it off it will cause pressure problems.
I would go to a Peugeot dealer to locate a new canister and any other parts you need to complete the system as it was designed to be.
Have a look here for an explanation of a typical fuel system......

Hi Willy
Thanks for the explanation. I found that my car doesnt have that canister (maybe because it was manufactured in my country Indonesia-spec down). I will look after the can, do you know the part number for the carbon canister? From the link that you gave, I think the vent pipe should bring the fuel evap back to the throttle inlet? is that true? thx for help

I don't know the part number sorry. I think all 406's would have this part as standard though, I would be surprised if it left the factory like this.
Try sending member 'K3nny' on here a Private Message as he may be able to help. He's from Jakarta and may know where you can get the parts you need (or at least compare your car to his own petrol car). memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=229
Yes the system uses a vacuum from the inlet manifold to draw vapour through the Canister.

Re: ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
Hi Welly, Last time I checked it to dealer, they told me that every 406 in Indonesia doesnt have any carbon canister attached with. And they said that was okey, they did a check over my fuel line and they found nothing that unusual regarding the odor. Do you have any sugestion where does the odor come from ?

Re: ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
That is strange for the Indonesia market not to have the carbon canister
If you keep getting this petrol odour then there may be a slight leak somewhere (maybe around the fuel filter?) it will be a case of looking over the whole system for clues. 406 petrol leaks are not common over here
Did you try contacting "k3nny" ? he has not been on this web site for a long time

Re: ASK - About the fuel filler vent pipe and fuel odor
ya, maybe because the car was manufactured here, to reduce the cost they cut the spec down.
haven't tried contacting k3nny yet. hehe
do you know any other 4060c member form Indonesia?

I think my problem hasn't solved. I still smell the odor, even worst. Could you give all information about odor/leakage problem that have reported in this forum/based on your experiences ? I've searched over the forum and found only a few info. Could you give me any possibilities where does the odor come from? or any cases similar to my case. thanx all
