Re: Sluggish HDI and more...

No idle stepper on diesel cars, they don't have a throttle.

This is precisely the (main) reason for better diesel fuel economy - lack of throttling losses.

Re: Side lights randomly work and then don't

Mysterious. PP2000 would help here, to determine where the fault is. It could tell you the position of the lights command on the stalk, and activate the lights without using the stalk. The sidelights on my V6 coupe didn't work when I got it. I replaced the COM2000 and everything was fine for a few w...

Re: Diesel fuel filters - what's the big deal?

I change mine every 12k and it gets noticeably grubby in that interval! It's catching dirt/rust from the fuel tank/system, as well as (in the 406 case) bits of swarf from the LP pump  I doubt these would ever get past the filter, even if it was not changed for a long time, but the flow might ...

Re: Spare key problem

The "point at the interior light" one is for the very early 406s which had infra-red keys instead of RF - you can tell these because the LED is visible on the key.

Re: Rear fog light

When you say the bulb holder and block connector are OK, is there 12V at the bulb-positive wire when the fog is turned on?

I've got a nasty feeling the fogs are BSI switched...
