Re: V6 (ES9J4) clutch cylinder

If you can't find one in a breakers yard, I'd suggest seeing if you can upgrade to the separates system used in 1999-on 406s. Last time I looked, the cylinders could be bought from ECP or dealers for about £15, but you'd also need a new brake fluid reservoir and the pipework which might be harder to...

Re: Motorcycling and getting a licence. Caution: 46 yr old man talking

My brother rode motorbikes for a few years. It took several "accidents", and at least 2 visits to hospital in the back of an ambulance before he had his big off. Air ambulance, spinal board, and yeah he broke a couple of vertebrae about a month before his wedding. His wedding photos all include a ne...

This one may* have been a slushmatic too, not sure what the deal is there either but hoping they progressed a bit better than the AL4 by 2012... A couple of years ago I had the misfortune to drive an A4 (brand new, delivery miles only) hire car with an auto box. I hated it. No, I loathed it. Stupid...

My take, having seen the wife go from "I'd never drive anything but a diesel" to "Why would anyone want a diesel", is this: First, the noise. Petrols are a lot quieter and transmit less vibration to the passengers through the seats. Even the best in terms of engine and/or cabin soundproofing, like T...

Re: Another MOT shake up

I have just bought a 56 A4 3.0Tdi which was built without DPF. Didn't become standard fit on those until 2008. Need to find out if it's safe to get a remap on it. My understanding is that a properly done remap can result in more power/torque AND cleaner emissions due to the car burning the fuel in ...

Re: Another MOT shake up

In the MOT testing manual I linked above - 8.2.2.1 "Emission control equipment fitted by the manufacturer missing, obviously modified or obviously defective" or "Evidence that the diesel particulate filter has been tampered with" is a major fail. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/apr/14/mot-cha...

Re: Another MOT shake up

Suddenly driving back home from the local test centre to organise or perform a fix becomes a very costly exercise. I'm going to have to ditch my usual test-only place now for someone who has a financial interest in seeing cars fail Not with you, nothing has really changed here. I don't what constit...

Re: Another MOT shake up

Bulbs and wipers are one thing, but there's also a lot of failure points which are difficult if not impossible for a DIY'er to anticipate - emissions, brake balance, handbrake efficiency (if you have a 406 or E39, probably other cars, that one's always going to be a lottery), split gaiters, worn bal...

Re: Fuel filter conspiracy theorist

Your Renault dealer is breaking the law by saying if the car isn't serviced at a Renault dealer then your warranty is void! Absolutely, however for cars under warranty, it's still best to get dealer servicing as "full dealer service history" maintains substantial resale value to the car! My plan th...

could be worse... could be german! When flogging the 540i, I got nearly 50 messages in my ebay inbox asking questions like: * When was the cooling system replaced? * How long since it last got a new radiator? * Are any of the coolant hoses original? * How often does the coolant need refilling? * Doe...

What about just getting a garage to weld it up?

Re: How many cars have you owned?

1996 Renault Laguna RT Sport 1.8 . Very comfortable, but so badly built it's a wonder it left the factory without bits falling off! 1997 Peugeot 406 2.0 Turbo estate . Loved it. 1998 Peugeot 406 V6 Saloon . Loved the engine, hated the body. 1999 Peugeot 406 V6 Coupé . Loved everything about it. Too...

Re: V6 Saloon Alternator

See howto here for belt removal: http://406oc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8145 That bit's easy. The alternator's sandwiched between the AC pump and PAS pump though, so it might be difficult to get it unbolted without the right deep sockets, and might actually be impossible to remove with the radistor...

Only thing I'm worried about is it's never been dropped in the entirety of the cars life, I remember Frank saying something about the bolts snapping? :? My plan is to soak the sub frame bolts in PlusGas for the next couple months until I'm home from Uni, then once I'm back I'm hoping it should be e...

Re: Car Insurance capers - need some advice

If it's on your drive you can continue to tax it, or you can sorn it. tax is apparently void as soon as it's sold though As for insurance, if someone wants a test drive, let them - as long as they can show you a comprehensive insurance document covering it (i.e. dayinsure / tempcover). If they're no...
