You might not see a drop in the water level if the water's being replaced by air. Even if the thermostat's stuck, the system should pressurise, so I'd suspect a substantial amount of air in there. By all means, use a tin of radiator flush. Anything with Holts or Wynns on it will probably do the trick.

When I read your post above I thought you managed to nip the union up a little (?) so I was suggesting to see if it did the trick before you go a-messin' with the injector itself. I'm pretty sure you won't get a spanner to it, I didn't have one big enough myself but it looked to me like I'd have to ...
