Re: Life span of catalytic converter?
It's very rare for a diesel cat to fail! There is a smoke test for the diesel emissions on the mot, visible smoke is a fail. Modern diesels are limited in their rev range so almost all pass the test as the engines will not rev when not moving....it's unusual to actually get a reading on the test mac...

Re: Very light whining noise after cambelt change
Glad you managed to fix it :) I used to maintain a fleet of 60 2.0 HDI vans and replaced the timing belt kits on each one, plus I've done several 406 and 307 HDI ones, plus a couple of 407s. I had a couple of tight ones amongst all of the ones I did. I replaced the timing belt kit for a sadly depart...

Re: Very light whining noise after cambelt change
Yes, the slackening of the 3 bolts is related to the 2.2 engine. Your engine whine is definitely caused by the belt tension being too tight. Fit a 16mm spanner to the cam pulley and gently tap it to the left so that tension is on the right side of the belt (fuel pump pulley) then get hold of the ten...

Re: 406 heater
Undo the black bleed screw and fit a plastic bottle cut in half into the filler tank...fill the plastic bottle and let water run out of the bleed screw for a couple of minutes until it flows freely...it helps to have the radiator higher than the heater, ie, pointing uphill....run the engine with the...

This one is amazing - the handbrake works, I feel inclined to take it apart and find out why. Peter Told you before that the handbrake can be good if properly adjusted & setup  I've been saying that for many years...check out the knowledge base! After all my 49 years working on motor vehicles...

Re: Fuel (diesel) woes.
Have you checked that fuel is actually being supplied to the filter, ie, taken off main supply pipe then turn on the ignition to see if fuel flows?
Have you tried some Easy Start?

Re: New 'stricter' MOTs...
Still amazes me that people would send a car for an MOT knowing the tyres are on the limit, or there's bulbs out etc. This used to seriously wind me up when a customer gives you their car to get through the test and you find that: There is no fuel in the car. The tyres are bald...how the heck can I...

Re: Intermitent Clunking from N/S front, on Hard right hand turn
It's possible there could be an issue with the power steering. You really need to be outside of the car in position when someone drives the car and watch and listen to the car to see if anything shows up. Check the wheel on full lock without moving the car to see if the wheel is catching anything. A...

Re: Intermitent Clunking from N/S front, on Hard right hand turn
On coldish mornings, when I first drive my 2003 406 HDi Estate (160,000miles) out from it's over night parking place and turn hard right on full lock, it has been making pretty awful noises and judders from the N/S front. It was the same last winter, then I suspected the suspension top mount bearin...

I got my son's 2004 Passat 1.9 diesel...189,000 miles... through the test yesterday...it failed on both sides top suspension arms (common VW/Audi fault), brake light o/s, holes in both front wings (sharp edges)...changed both front shockers and springs as they have to come off to do the suspension a...

Re: Rear handbrake adjuster jammed full on (cant move Car)
Apart from trying to use something stronger than a screwdriver and using a hammer on the adjuster, take out the screws holding the disc onto the hub then through a wheel bolt hole use a punch or something on the handbrake shoe metal frame and knock it backwards towards the backplate and or use somet...

Re: New 'stricter' MOTs...
The correct information on whether an EML is on and fails the test is that it only applies to diesel vehicles used after 1st July 2008 and for petrol vehicles used after 1st July 2003. The brake fluid test is that a failure is for dirty brake fluid. Regarding anything used for emission control like ...

Re: humming noise
A wheel bearing noise will be there all of the time when coasting out of gear...it may STOP on cornering for a short while. If the noise goes away when the brakes are applied then you should check the brakes before anything else. An out of shape tyre will give a humming/buzzing sound as you drive al...
