Re: Problems when engine warm

I have had some of those symptoms caused by a faulty pressure regulator on the back of the HP diesel pump, rev limiting when hot and difficult to start, not noticed any smoke though. They are not to difficult to change, remove the fuel filter assy and you can get there quite easily, two screws, phil...

Re: 2.0 HDi 110hp Bad cold start

Glow plugs don't normally do much on Hdi engines - unless you live in Siberia! Without seeing it I would suggest that the starter is not turning the engine over fast enough, white smoke is unburnt fuel so the fueling is OK so I would suspect either the battery or starter motor. Try jumping it from a...

Sorry to hear that Steve, we have had cats and dogs all our married life, 56 years and you never get used to loosing them, its one of the few downsides of having pets. We lost our two cats about 4 years ago, a Siamese who was 18 and a moggie that was nearly 20. We then acquired 3 Siamese cat that wa...

Re: Reliability

I am only going on my own experience, I ran my first one to 246k with no engine problems but was written off by water getting into the electrics. Our last one had done 212k, that was sold because of a failed brake servo requiring to much work. I have been involved with six or more 406's most of whic...

Re: Problems when engine warm

Are you loosing coolant? Is the cooling system pressurised excessively i.e blowing coolant from the overflow or filler cap? If you have either it would indicate the suggestions above. That would normally cause the engine to run unevenly as at least one cylinder will be down on power. If its an injec...

Re: Petrol autos

I personally wouldn't have one as one of the greatest benefits of the manual hdi is the fuel consumption, you won't get anything like the 50 mpg+ that the diesel gives. I wouldn't have an auto anyway because an auto box is one of the few car parts I haven't repaired and if it fails it will write the...

Re: Reliability

I have come across a few cases of head gasket but as mentioned they are few and far between. I have only had one and have bought quite a number of 406's for myself and friends. The 'one' was that very nice one I bought earlier this year for very little money, we ran it for sometime but I had to top ...

Re: Head gasket repair

Yes, depends how bad the leak is, if there is a bit of gasket missing, no it wont work, on yours it sounds as though there is. The other possibility is a cracked head, although that is only likely if it has already boiled. There should be plenty of heads about anyway.

Re: So what shall I replace it with

I've had a BMW 5 series and and a Merc c220, the BMW wasn't to bad although I found the seats very uncomfortable but the ride in the Merc was dreadful compared with the C5, as I said not everyone wants a soft ride but its the most important feature for me. I ran hydropnumatic Citroen's for 25 years ...

I doubt the ride will be as good but try both of them, not everyone wants a soft ride.

Re: So what shall I replace it with

I'm just considering buying my second one, even the steel sprung one surpasses the 406 for comfort and space - and quietness and is likely to be considerably cheaper to maintain than the hydropnumatic version. My wife's 406 has just failed terminally after 220k and many years and she has fallen in l...

Have your brakes deteriorated at all? The vacuum pump can fail and provide to little to control the turbo properly.

Re: So what shall I replace it with

I replaced mine with a Mk3 C5 estate 2.0. Hdi, huge amount of space and an amazing ride and are very quiet, light and easy to drive and very good on fuel. A decent one can be had for a thousand pounds upwards now. They use the later 16 valve engine which seems to be equally as reliable as the 8 valv...

Re: old topic, 406 replacement ?

The only car I have found that can give as good or a better ride that the 406 is the Mk3 C5. I recently bought one with steel suspension and the ride quality is superb, I'm sure the hydropnumatic one would be even better, but I have gone for simplicity (relative).
