Re: rumble and knock from front wheels

Moving the wheel in and out at the top should show any movement in the track rod end, if that's OK its probably the lower ball joint, you need to take the weight off the wheel to see if that moves.

Re: Car falling apart

If you get one of these 'top up' cans from ebay it comes with a pressure gauge which can be subsequently useful for checking the pressure. I need to replace the condenser on my C5 and if the system is empty there is no reason why I can't, I can then take it to one of the firms that does a 'no work n...

Re: what ? starter motor ?

Some of the later starter motors were increased in power to turn the engine more quickly improving starting. I have just fitted a new one to my C5 hdi and that was rated at 2.2kw which equates to about 2 bhp, the original one was about 1.6 kw I believe, I hasn't made a great deal of difference but i...

Re: 406 605 607 top mounting bearings

I could have done with them a few years ago - but I don't have one now either, in fact I think I also have a spare bearing. Ebay is probably the best place to sell them.

The extra weight of those batteries can't be doing the ride any harm.

Re: Electronic ignition fault

Not good news I'm afraid. The grommet became dislodged from the bonnet pull cable and poured water over the BSI. I got it dried out once and it started, the car was then left for sometime with a somewhat damp interior and never started again. As the only course of action was to replace the BSI unit ...

Take the caliper off and unscrew it from the pipe. Refitting is reverse.

Re: handbrake shoes

Bitumastic paint is probably better from a rust prevention point of view. You need the softest lings you can get for the very inefficient handbrakes on the 406 but I don't know who makes them, some research would be necessary.

Re: WANTED Peugeot 406 2.1 diesel

I thought about a Xantia many years ago and decided to get an XM instead as they have similar complexities but more room, both inside and mechanical access.I ran them for about 15 years and did a lot of miles. When the abundant supply of them ran out I switched to 406 estates which I think come a go...

Re: WANTED Peugeot 406 2.1 diesel

Do you mean a 2.1, thats an XUD engine, they are pretty old and scarce now, or is it a 2.2 Hdi you are looking for?

Re: whats going on ??

Sounds like just an electronic glitch, I was an electronics engineer for 50 years but I don't understand modern vehicle electronics - or most others come to that. If it occurs again you cold try a BSI reset or it could be that your battery voltage is low, check for about 14.4 volts across the batter...

Re: and today i have mostly been...

Never actually done that but I did drive a CX for several miles up the M5 when it first opened with a flat front tyre. Thought the roads surface was a bit rough but it handled perfectly.
