Re: 2.2 fuel economy!!!
I don't have that problem, I'm an old man and drive like one, rarely exceed 60 mph and 2000 rpm. I had my moments when younger, in the days of Vauxhall Cresta's and other 6 cylinder delights but comfort and economy are my priorities now, 67.8 mpg over 650 miles coming home from Scotland a couple of ...

Re: Recommend a Contact Cleaner
The Radiospares stuff we used to have in the '50s was pretty well neat carbon tetrachloride - outlawed now I believe but it worked well though.

Re: 2.2 fuel economy!!!
Probably the best figures I have seen for a 2.2, certainly better than mine but the 2.0. will do 60mpg at 60 mph all day so it still leaves something to be desired.

Re: Recommend a Contact Cleaner
I found that WD40 works better than a proprietary switch cleaner, at least it did on radio and TV volume controls. I used this in preference to anything else before I retired as a TV engineer. The only problem is that it dries out almost completely so leaves no lubricant, so on switches a small amou...

Re: New battery time! What type?
There are several places on ebay doing Bosch and Varta batteries at very reasonable prices including next day delivery. I have had a couple and been very pleased with them. Some advertisers give the battery weight which is very useful as it tells you how much lead you are getting for your money, som...

Re: MoT fail
Thanks for that. That's pretty well what I did except for the adjustment on the handbrake lever, I will give it a try.

Re: MoT fail
I have obtained two more 406's for friends and those handbrakes are pretty useless to. As I said I have replaced everything on mine and made sure the cables were adjusted correctly but still little success. But they are such a nice car in all other respects - I will forgive them that.

Re: Stiff Stearing
Well done. you need to get it nice and oily now so it can work into the joints. Chain saw oil is ideal but if not gearbox oil is fairly viscous, failing that engine oil will do but you will need to lubricate it regularly.

Depends what the fault is - but yes it probably would, eventually. Easy enough to check though with a voltmeter as original post.

Re: Stiff Stearing
Just squirt some WD40 on it to loosen it up and then some engine oil, the best lubricant to use is chain saw oil if you have access to it, its very sticky so tends to stay, if not a good soaking with engine oil will do it, apply some oil and then work it in by turning the steering.
