Provided the valve isn't stuck open, you can disable it by pulling off and bunging the vacuum supply. This is a good post: soot in engine . I found mine much better behaved when it's cold, and improved the throttle response. So far fuel economy is down on short runs, but it's come cold and I'm enjo...
