Re: BE4 gearbox - missing bolt - M8x1.25?

Ah splendid :cheesy: You are most welcome 8) I was worrying that maybe the shaft had slipped along a bit and you'd never get it in there. While I was oot and a boot today it occurred to me to look in the repair manual: http://www.406oc.co.uk/download/file.php?id=3085 That's the first time I ever fo...

Re: BE4 gearbox - missing bolt - M8x1.25?

Well I happily cut a thread onto a 10mm M8 bolt, cut it to 50mm long and rounded the end off, slipped a washer on with a drop of thread lock and installed it.
The gearbox seems pretty happy in all gears.
Thank you for your help steve_earwig.

Re: BE4 gearbox - missing bolt - M8x1.25?

I've been squinting at the diagrams but the only screw I can see in that general area is the one that seems to be holding the reverse shaft  I can't tell if it's inside the box or outside and we have to ignore the fact that the RPO is well out of range for a 406...(the earlier diagrams show ...

BE4 gearbox - missing bolt - M8x1.25?

Hi all, spying a transmission oil leak, I discovered that there was a bolt missing from the front lower area of the box. I've temporarily cut down a bolt and fitted it with a washer to a short enough length to act as a "plug". I cut it down so that I can be sure that isn't going to interfere with th...

HDi - TPS cable - what to do when adjustment runs out?

Hi all, so my 406 Rapier 2.0HDi 90bhp estate now has smooth steering - Hurrah! Thank you guys, but, now lets chat about the TPS and the accelerator cable. (BOOO!) I've been taking up slack on the accelerator cable at the TPS end over the years, but now it's a stretch too far. What are my options? Is...

Re: Side exit exhaust

Hi Chaps and Chapesses, I have to admit that I'm confused as to the benefit of this mod. My natural thought is that it's an attempt to minimise loses through having a long exhaust for the pistons/turbo to push against by having a shorter pipe. But then - surely one could achieve the same benefit by ...

Re: I can has Stripper Scent

I was invited to, and given free entry to - a stripper joint in Texas by one of the strippers that took a shine to me during her day job as a bar-girl in a more regular bar. Sadly on the night that I attended, she wasn't there to enjoy the benefit of my company as her boyfriend had gone a bit suicid...

Re: Front top mount change

Hi Gumby, I am assuming that you're talking about the same top mount that I replaced recently when replacing my coils and strut-mount bearings? http://www.bluepoolinternet.com/externally-linked-images/cars/peugeot-406/406_hdi_20_90bhp_top_mount_annotated.jpg Whilst replacing the mounts, one of the n...

Re: Stiff Stearing

Finally - for this thread - some thoughts/tips for anyone wishing to replace their own coils, strut top-mounts or top-mount bearings, in no particular order: WD40/plusgas everything - the nut & washer on the top mount, the nut on the hub-carrier, the brake-line bracket bolts, the clamp-bolt in-board...

Re: Stiff Stearing

Well done. you need to get it nice and oily now so it can work into the joints. Chain saw oil is ideal but if not gearbox oil is fairly viscous, failing that engine oil will do but you will need to lubricate it regularly. Peter Hi Peter, thank you for your help. (thank you everyone!) It's been a co...

Re: Stiff Stearing

Just squirt some WD40 on it to loosen it up and then some engine oil, the best lubricant to use is chain saw oil if you have access to it, its very sticky so tends to stay, if not a good soaking with engine oil will do it, apply some oil and then work it in by turning the steering. Peter Hi Peter, ...

Re: Stiff Stearing

Ok, so I followed the good troubleshooting advice offered by jasper5. I raised the car onto some sturdy wooden blocks (my axle stands are still under the MG!), removed the wheels and disconnected the track rods. Rotating each hub/suspension assembly by hand showed that the assembly rotates freely an...

Re: Stiff Stearing

Good morning all! What a lovely sunny morning it is in Cornwall! Sadly I was unable to raise the car to separate track rods and test each suspension side and the steering individually last night - but I shall do so today.
