Re: FREE 406 HDI! YES, FREE
I would also add I have been checking my records and in the last 20,000 miles he's had all engine belts and pulleys replaced, all fluids flushed and replaced, new front springs and shockers, new front calipers and pads and new alternator. Tyres are Dunlop, dipped beams are LED, main beams are nightb...

FREE 406 HDI! NOW GONE
Hi All, My much loved 406 hdi 90 saloon has reached the end of its life with me. Its MOT'd to October but I had a pre-mot and my mechanic says needs new rear drums, shoes and handbrake cable, plus £400 worth of welding on the sills. Its got 170k on and a scruffy fading bonnet, plus a small dent in ...

Re: 406 Bonnet Release Cable
Thanks Ginger,
I can open the bonnet by pulling whats left of the cable with a pair of pliers-its finding a relacement cable thats the problem. I cant even find a universal one anywhere!
Regards,
John

406 Bonnet Release Cable
Hi Everyone, The bonnet release cable on my faithful steed has snapped-actually the nobble ( I think that's the technical term) on the handle end has come off. Its been increasingly difficult to open, possibly cable had stretched, so I need a new one. Can't find one anywhere-does anyone know of an a...

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
Fixed! The recently replaced wheel bearing was the problem. Replaced again and my car is running sweet!. Unfortunately the bearing fell apart coming out, so I'll never know what the problem was. My garage got a replacement (from a different supplier) and just charged me £30.00 for labour-they'll cla...

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
Well, I think we have eliminated everything but the recently replaced wheel bearing. I am going to take it back to the garage that did them and they will try replacing it. If there is a fault, they will try to get the cost back from the supplier.
I'll keep you posted.
John

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
Hi peter, For some reason my last reply didn't post. The input shaft bearing has made the car smoother and quieter and the stickiness on accelerating has gone. Just to try and eliminate things, I'll tell you what I have had done in the last year. New brake shoes, wheel cylinders and pads. Crankshaft...

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
I have just re read your original post and you said that the frequency of vibration changed when you change from 4th to 5th at a constant speed, that would suggest that its coming from the engine, I would check the crankshaft pulley, it may be disintegrating. Peter Thanks Peter, I had the crankshaf...

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
Well, I've had all the wheels and tyres swapped round and no difference. The tyre place cant find anything apparently wrong with steering or suspension. Could it be a transmission noise of some kind?

Re: strange noise from front end of 406
Thanks all, I have checked the wheel bolts and they are very tight. I'll try changing wheels round at weekend. I am sure now that the noise is rotational in nature-on a quiet road tonight it sounded a lot like a washing machine on a slow wash. Anyway, I'll try wheel swapping and see how we go. Cheer...

strange noise from front end of 406
My V reg 406 HDI 90 has developed a strange noise which appears to come from the front drivers side although a passenger says front centre. The noise sounds like a soft thumping noise. What it reminds me of most is when I had a faulty exhaust rubber years ago and the exhaust was bumping gently under...

Re: HDI 90 - Difficult to drive slowly
Have you checked the idle speed -should be 730 on a diesel. I had similiar problem recently caused by idling too fast-opened the bonnet, traced the cable to the plastic cam that controls the throttle, literally just touched it and idle speed went back to normal and normal driving resumed. No idea wh...

Re: adjusting 406 wipers
Thanks everyone, I measured them and they were on the correct way round. I've eventually managed to adjust both of the wiper arms so the sweep is correct. As a few people have said on this forum, thats a sod of a job becuse the nuts are on solid and there is an easily breakable plastic fitting under...
