A corroded wire within the loom is more than possible as I have had one. It was a power feed to the ECU and a few other components leading to an immobiliser fault. A quick check to see if the bsi is reading the key via the transponder is to open the drivers door with key in the ignition, if you get the usual annoying bleeping then it is ok.
