it can be done with the engine in place, but expect a lot of skint knuckles and swearing.

most jobs i do on mine, i find it easier to support the engine, and remove the mounts, that way the engine can be moved around the engine bay for clearance without having to undo the 10 million wires and pipes.

have you pumped any of the oil thru?

oil could go for the seals inside the pump.

did a clutch on a 406 with a DMF about 5 days ago, and i have to say, it wasn't very nice to drive at all compaired to mine, was actually starting to wonder if i'd screwed somthing up, but the owner said it felt perfect, so must have been right enough.

could it be a seized actuator?

seen that on T series rover turbos (T25)

skoosh of wd40 and some manual manipulation sorted it out.

not had any issues on my non HDI diesel from removing the battery, and my dads HDI dispatch van has not had any related issues with battey disconnection either, so really can't see this being THE problem, must only be a symptom of whatever other problem your having.

Sure that's not just the play allowed by the steering lock? no, deffo not that. with the wheels set straight, leave the keys in the ignition i jack up the car, slip my head underneath, and give the wheel a tug from side to side, up and down etc etc, no play at all up and down, but from side to side...
