Various bits and pieces for free
My 406 has sadly had to go for recycling. Following which I have some items which I would be happy to pass on to a fellow 406 enthusiast - 4 steel wheels with winter tyres, all undamaged and with useable tread, plus wheel bolts. An unused steel spare shod with an unused Dunlop tyre that has not been...

Replacement Backplate
I’m in the middle of replacing one of the rear back plates on my 110 estate - had to wait a week for a new plate to come from Germany - but now I’m unsure as to how best to detach the remains of the old one from its mounting - there are two ‘fixings’ which look a bit like rivets but I suspect they e...

Re: Wheel bolts - different types?
These bolts have fitted perfectly - sitting on the taper and the flat. Now clearly labelled in the boot that they are only for the spare wheel!

Re: Wheel bolts - different types?
That is plan B! For the moment I have seen some bolts on eBay which might work.

My current thought is this wheel might have come from a first generation 406.

Wheel bolts - different types?
I bought an unused steel 15” spare recently, as a couple of my winter wheels are fairly rusted and had occasion to use it this morning while investigating a slow puncture. Now I had noticed when I got the wheel that each bolt hole has a raised mount unlike my other steels. I assumed that this was to...

Re: Power Steering Failing
A postscript - the stiffness returned but this time I managed to lubricate the bottom joint more effectively from within the engine compartment by using a radiator paintbrush (long handle and angled head) soaked in cv joint grease. Simples!

Re: Front near side clunk
The clunk turned out to be the spring turning raggedly against the strut top. After cleaning and applying grease it no longer clunks.

Re: Front near side clunk
Good call, Doggy. Thanks.
I know that on some cars you can change the bearing without removing the strut - by releasing the top bolts and compressing the spring. Is this possible on the 406?

Front near side clunk
My 406 has had a persistent clunk at the front for months now. I’ve replaced the drop links and ARB bushes and there is no play in the lower balljoint and the track rod end but still the clunk is there. The car actually passed its last MOT with the clunk - I was hoping the test would throw up a faul...

Re: Power Steering Failing
I am very happy to report that my steering is almost back to normal - just needs a little more grease in the right spot - the steering column universal joints. The bottom one is easier to do by trickling the grease down the column. From underneath and from the top in the engine compartment it's a bi...

Re: Power Steering Failing
Thanks - it might be a few days before I get a chance to get back into my garage so that I can get underneath for a look in relative comfort (it's too long to stay in the garage). Snow is its way up here........

Re: Power Steering Failing
And I have had the car up off both front wheels while bleeding the power steering - first without the engine running, and then wth it idling, and the steering was smooth from stop to stop. Today I noticed that the steering is heavy immediately after startup then it lightens but not consistently. It ...

No, I haven't but I did see that suggested elsewhere earlier today. Will give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Not sure where I go from here but I do have plenty of time right now to think about it!

Re: Power Steering Failing
How can I determine if my car has the variable power steering? It's a 2000 110 Executive estate.
